View Full Version : Fear Of The Dentist?

Matthew
21-08-03, 01:11 PM
I'm back again to the dentist this afternoon for a filling, just one thankfully.

While I admit I'm not a big fan by any means of the dentist, I don't like going at all, but I'll get there, just! :lol:

There are people I know that have such a fear of the dentist they would rather have their teeth rot and drop out, than go.

Here's a totally off topic poll anyway, might be interesting to see how people feel :D

I go every 6 months. I have to pretend to be brave because the kids go too, but I feel sick every time :(

I had to go back and get a small filling last time and when I came out I had nail marks all over my arms.

Good luck!

;)

Don't really mind once I'm in there...

It's the getting there/making the appointment that's the problem.

Aaaw Matthew, hope you are feeling better by now. :)

I am the worst - never seen a dentist since I was 7!!!!! Won't tell you how old I am now, but it's a lot more than that!!! ;)

It's not so much fear in my case, more extreme embarrassment :blink: .

Worse still, I still won't make an appointment and my kids were due there yesterday evening!!!

But it gets even worse - my wisdom teeth ache and I will be forced to act sometime - yikes :blush:

I listened to a very interesting programme on a web based radio show. This chap was talking about teeth and how tooth enamel, like bone can regenerate. He claimed that the enamel of the teeth contain small holes and using toothpaste clogs up these holes and so inhibits regeneration. He then went on to say that the worse thing you can do is let a dentist use a metal implement on your teeth.

I thought he talked a lot of sense, but then I would, last time I went to the dentists I had a terrible time. So now I use soap and bicarb to clean my teeth. Sounds awful doesn't it? But I was pleasantly surprised to find that scrubbing your teeth with soap doesn't taste that bad. This chap claimed that if you have sensitive teeth and you use soap you will find your teeth becaome much less sensitive. And guess what? He was right. I can chomp down on an ice lolly now and not feel a thing :D

Anyway, here's something I found on google:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/...une/006846.html (http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-houston/2003-June/006846.html) which says more or less the same thing.

There is something else I could say about dental implements, but I don't want to scare people too much :o

Thanks Mazza - well three and a half hours after the injection finally wore off! Resulting in sore/painful tooth - not sure if where I had the injection or it's the tooth, either way I'm afraid the Neurofen BEAT the Stella Beer tonight; which is most unfortunate really, as I was looking forward to that.

Maybe in a few hours.....! :lol:

Hey, if you're wisdom teeth are playing up and aching, you really must be brave and go and get it sorted. :) :D They could infect, inflame and decay nastily otherwise and give you a really bad time. :sad: I won't tell you about my wisdom teeth, but suffice to say they've all gone now - 2 at a time in my early 20's - they would have caused *big probs* if I'd still got them.

I believe Wisdom Teeth are a by gone tooth no longer needed that were used to crunch bones when human's ate more raw meat/foods etc years and years ago, anyone confirm this? :D

Oooh IknowIknowIknow I should, but aaaahhhh....

Hmm, not sure about the soap though never heard of that before!! I would even try that before going to the dentist if I thought it would keep me out of there! :hihi:

I have an electric toothbrush though - brilliant!!!

By the way, Stella AND Nurofen would def do the trick!!! :D

i have heard the acronym "wtfh" before...i would be suprised if it meant what i thought it meant ..carrrblooey!

i might buy a new car

i also hate the dentist....i had free dentilation up until left shhkewl..i was shocked to find out have to pay for it ..what a cheek!....
i didn't see a dental for must be over 4 years i think *cue imbarrassmeant*..not so much hating it...as just lazy to join a place and make an appointment :P

first time i had a check up was few months ago i think...needed fillin...the g*t didn't want to use anasthetick.." he said " i don't usually werk with that" (obvioulsy to keep the conveyer belt churning) dentists do get major mulla....it compensate fort the fact they are failed doctors, can you tell i am not overly enamoured with em.
my dentist is a sarcy plonk but its not the time to call someone on being gittish when they are about to start waving sharp implements inside yer gob, plus teeth done by g*t is better than rotten teeth when am unable to get in any other place..big waitin lists here.

($1 to april for use of gob)

Why Vern!....wondering what YOU think it means :hihi: :hihi:

Would you like to comment on WHICH new car you're thinking of buying? Will you be doing some cleaning or something to raise the money? :P

Agree, dentist is better than nad teeth...as I found out to my cost(both meanings!) when I didn't go out of fear/poverty/laziness for four years :D

But think of it, don't dentists have a vested interest in bad teeth? Think about it ;)

On wisdom teeth. I was scheduled to have one of my wisdom teeth out in hospital about ten years ago. Turned up at the hospital... and turned back again. Long story short; didn't have the tooth out and the terrible ache and pain went away and never came back. The tooth is still there.

On the teeth cleaning, yes I've heard a few things about that, friend of a friend tried to bring all this to light after reading a book about dental fillings and just exactly what dentists were up to in our mouths (oh shut up!), what they shouldn't be doing and what they get away with. All down to money of course.
Saying that, my fella has a brilliant dentist, who wouldn't do anything he shouldn't and is 'conservative' in his treatment. Suffice to say I can't get on his list as it's full.

Wisdom teeth. All four out in hospital....3 weeks off sick...more than for broken limbs, and proper operations.....VERY scary, and painful, and unsightly(face like a football for about a week). Oh, and no solid food for two weeks....great if you fancy dieting :lol:

Had some terrible dentists, but right now, have the dental equivalent of an angel of mercy....she should win an award. Spinkysay...this one is worth moving for! :lol: :hihi: :lol:

Guess I'm just lucky.. had one filling when i was 16 through one of those horrible dental clinics, still convinced i didn't need it and the x-ray's i've seen show it as extremely shallow...

Had 3 of my wisdom teeth out years back purely because they were rubbing on the gum and making it sore, quick jab of aneasthetic followed by push+twist+crunch and they were out... pretty gross and uncomfortable but over in seconds...

If you want real oral discomfort, get your tongue pierced ;) I couldn't eat properly for ages, though it was more down to getting used to the chunk of metal in my mouth and my tongue was massively swollen for days... drooling everywhere like a dog looking at a plate of sausages too... :wacko:

22-08-03, 11:12 AM
Ah, wisdom teeth...

I had all four out at once (proper operation too :lol: ) I was battered and bruised all over for weeks.

Had to drink through a straw and mush up all my food.

Is that why Matthew, sapphire and me have lost all our wisdom? ;) :P

I'd love to hear more about this teeth cleaning stuff, can we start a new thread? :D (Shiny teeth ;) )

I'll find out the name of the book. I'm investigating another medical conspiracy - gallbladder removal!!!!!! No kidding.

My last trip to a dentist was because I had (what I thought) was mercury leaking from a filling. Th etooth hurt like billyo and I had a metallic taste in my mouth for days, horrible. Eventually got myself to a dentist, some bint who looked like a model, i honestly thought she was going to whip off her white coat, untie her blonde hair, take off her glasses and jump on the man in the waiting room. I digress... it was a swanky surgery and I didn't feel I should be there! She couldn't find anything wrong and gave me an anti biotic, even though she said she couldn't find anything wrong. Ho hum. Cost me an arm and a leg and I'm not going back.

Don't mind dentists too much, I guess because I haven't had bad experiences with dentists, I've had many, far too many, bad experiences win the medical field, hence my loathing of anything medical.

I'm quite lucky in that my dental surgeon specialises in people who have phobias about dental treatment (me being one of them).

You get gas and air, relaxing music (Steve Wright in the afternoon by request if you get a pm time slot) and a gold star for being good.

Gas and air makes you feel a bit out of it for a good hour afterwards anyway, but well worth it cause you don't end up getting your knickers in a twist.

Thanks mazza for your concern, I am STILL not feeling better.

I am in agony. I took April's advice and got some Feminax (not working), have had (not all at once I hasten to add) paracetamol, ibuprofen (400mg), Anadin Extra, Nurofen, Codeine Phosphate - nothing is working :o .

The pain is unbearable.

I have now resorted to my wheat pack stuck to my face and a bottle of whisky. I hope that numbs the pain somewhat. :drunk:

I've come to this thread a bit late and I've just voted that I enjoy my visits. Hope you don't think I'm wierd. My dentist is very caring and gentle. My partner who is terrified of the dentist will actually go to him rather that endure pain for the first time in her life which must say something. She still hates it but at least she gets treatment. What else can I say about him:

He's national health - which is pretty uncommon these days
He plays the guitar (badly) just like me and admires Mark Knopfler - just like me
He employs stunning blond assistants who take your mind off what he's doing.

For those of you who hate and are terrified of the dentist, I have some idea of what it's like because I've seen how my partner reacts. But I've also seen what a good dentist can do - he doesn't conquer hre fear, but he makes it a bit easier to cope.

Oh No Holly,

it sounds really bad - I'd be livid - after plucking up the courage to go and this has happened??? :sad:

I think you'll have to beg your doctor for extra strength codeine and paracetamol tablets (recommended ;) ) and in the meantime a few bevvies (whiskey's good enough!) might knock it out (not that I condone drinking for medicinal purposes y'understand...).

Hope you get it sorted very soon - make sure the dentist or your GP gets you a decent painkiller tomoorow asap.

absolutely petrified here, comes from remembering the fillings as a child with no anasthetic :sad:

i went 11 years without a check-up - this reign finally ended 4 years ago when i suffered *severe* constant pain for 3 days and nights, i ended up taking far too many painkillers, biting on towels, punching walls and was on my knees swaying back and forth while in tears... i eventually had to give into my phobia and make the appointment and keep it! i needed prompt treatment, by time i got there, the pain had gone, but i was so fearful of it returning that i did keep the appointment. i had to have a root filling, which in hindsight wasn't actually *that* bad, he really was very good at explaining just enough to keep me informed, but i still had my eyes firmly clamped shut throughout and i'm sure he's got holes in the chair where i was clenching my fists down tight.. 4 weeks, 5 visits and 500 quid later i was given the all clear.. his gentle manner worked really well until my last visit where all his hard work was undone during a filling in a wisdom tooth and i was totally freaked out once again. and so the cycle begins again :( 4 years and no check-ups later.. am afraid i'll have to be in serious pain to return.

thankfully, my eldest son loves his dentist, she really is very good with him, poor lil guy has to have a tooth out on friday (he had a check up this morning) as his adult tooth is trying to push out the remains of a baby tooth (never and i repeat never give a child medicine without knowing just how much sugar is in it >.<) and it&#39;s basically stuck, and there is a huge bruise appearing on his gum with a possible infection >.< unfortunately i&#39;m way too squeamish to deal with this sort of thing, the surgery are *brilliant* with him, and he&#39;s actually looking forward to going in&#33;

well done for being a big brave soldier matthew&#33;&#33; hehe ;) joking aside, hats off to ya to be able to go&#33; :thumbs:

i agree dentists yuk&#33;

i am so guilty too of "thinking" it will hurt alot ;) .. rather than just going and waiting and then letting it hurt :P

i had my very first filling without aneasthetic { wonder if thats spelt right}

a few months ago ..in reality hurt less than when having the jections

tention was an understatement&#33;

i was trying all these mental exercise things, thinking of other stuff, trying to put mind elsewhere.." i choose to not even think about that part of body so no pain" i&#39;m not very good at it yet&#33; ...but trying.

and you know i came to the conclusion that closing eyes was a bad idea&#33;...because that just focusus a person more on feeling, i had eyes wide open glaring to get as much distraction as possible :P

i tried all that thinking of desert island, or a person ;) very Zen ... tough to do though&#33;

Heres to pain free dentacles :)
