Hi all

Not sure if this topic has already been discussed so appologies if it has.

I have heard so much about it on news etc and i decided to look in to it and when i have worked my charges out from 2001 on three bank accounts its a huge amount of money (times were hard while Mr Muk and myself were are uni  ) so i have worked out all the charges and interest and i am going to send it off to bank. I dont think i will get it all back but any amount is a bonus :D .

Hi all

I forgot to say you can request statements form last six years over the phone and my bank is charging £10 pounds for this and they are trying to put you off by saying it can take 40 working days to get them, but i have internet banking and my bank now has a section on it where you can check all the above on line and save the tenner and the wait  not sure about all the other banks and there policies.

Hi Marieuk :)

I have never done it but in my Avon rep days ( ) we had a forum to go on and loads of members on there did this and got their money back. Some were only offered small amounts others battled it out with the bank - I remember one girl got over £2500 back from her bank going back years!

Good luck with it!

I didnt know you could do that .

Is it true as last months charges were £250 which i think is a bit too much to say the least.

Funny I should see this, but my bank just credited me £3882.76 on Friday - This was with Halifax, and they were really quick about it.. It took a while to prep it, but I'm the same as muk, after three kids in 4 years, the bank had taken quite a bit, so I asked for it, and got it back in full!!

The banks are scared to go to small claims in case it is found that they have been charging illegally, and a judgement would stop them charging at all!

I would say claim claim claim - It only costs time, unless they decide not too, then you can take it to small claims, and almost certainly win with costs. Have a glance at the forum above and go for it.

[quote]My bank is HSBC.[/quote Blimey - I wish you well - they are my bank for our joint account and are absolutely hopeless. I have been with them over 30 years and they are just as bad as they were when they were the Midland - sorry if I have offended anyone who works for them but just speaking from personal experience. Lloyds overcharged me, denied me then after 6 months wrangling paid up, but without any interest they had charged.
The only one I have never had any hassle with is NatWest....so far (fingers crossed)

make sure you stick to your guns though as the bank will try and get you to settle for less than they owe you, its is nerve wracking but many people have been sucessful.

this is one popular movement that I hope will suceed, banks have benn ripping people off for too long.

I used to work for a Building Society turned PLC, they decided to change the rules on crediting cash to cover debits. basically you used to be able to put the money in the account during the day the debit was due out and it wouldnt bounce, they changed it so that you had to have the money in the account 24 hours beforehand, I am not lying if I tell you this was deliberately done to 'increase the bank's income from charges'. at the same time they removed the Branch Manager's discretion to refund charges, with the upshot that any customer wanting to complain had to write to Head Office about it.

cynical cynical cynical...the charges back then were £37.50 for anything that bounced, god knows what they are now, its doesnt cost anything like that to bounce an item now everything is computerised.

good luck to you all!

I asked for the PPI to be taken off a loan as we were missold it so they re did the loan without but added so much extra intrest, we still owe the same  In the middle of trying to get our money back from that at the moment.CN

 Believe me ,we will! This is similar to bank charges but with this,we were told we could not have the loan unless we purchased PPI with it, which we now know to be baloney. The bank were quick enough to remove it but only if the loan was re done but the miss selling part they are saying proove it. Havn't tryed the bank charge re claiming yet but will do

hmm, somewhat sharp practice really as they should have rebated all the PPi premiums you paid onto the loan and the interest that was charged on the PPi, then recalculated the loan repayments, not made you take out a brand new one! thieving bandits!

let me know how you get on!

If anyone wants to claim back their charges and needs help with paperwork and support, you can also go to this site:

Consumer Action Group (http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/)

They will help you every step of the way, including how individual banks work, so you have some idea.

Good luck to those that go for it. I've not heard about a failure yet!

CN the way you have been treated is horrible  good luck with the battle and keep us posted.

Annabel i was under the impression that i would not get it all back  are we entitled to it all back?? i was just going to see what they offered us. It would be great to get it all back. I have heard that the banks are being very crafty with all the bank charge requests and giving people the run about.

SH thanks for the link i will read it later (not much time at the mo :coffee: :coffee: )

Sparrow thanks for the good luck wishes :flowers2:

Planet 24 we constantly hear bad reports about the different banks are current accounts are with HSBC but our other accounts are with other banks. I guess i will have a better picture of HSBC bank when our request is dealt with one way or another :errrm:........................watch this space!

Magpie i hope all went well today, fighting your way through the statements, i know its time consuming but if your entitled to it then you should get it.

well, thats just it marie, banks specialise in being crafty, so they will try to fob you off with an offer as this is the easy way out for them. but you have to stick to your guns and insist...those webstites that give out advice about this are spot on, the bank will try and avoid going to court as they really dont want their charges officially ruled illegal, my goodness imagine that? an end to the billions of ££££££s profit they make each year! ;)

Hi All,

My mum works for a company that basically assists the bank (in her case Natwest) in gathering together old paperwork, taking copies, etc, etc and she says she spends nearly 85% time on retriving old bank statements due to this reclaiming business.

She could do with doing it for herself really 'cos she's paid so much interest charges in the past.

Your right though, banks do not want to go to court so they will try to offer you a settlement figure, but don't except, go for the full figure you are owed!

Good Luck everyone ;)

I'm having a long battle with HSBC even today they told me how wonderful they were....do I look like an idiot... I have been with them for 30 years and they owe me thousands and I'm going to get it  After them its Barclays, then Lloyds  The only ones that have been good over the years is NatWest.

I am swapping banks as we speak. They just wouldn't budge on the charges for me, and although they froze them this month (when they left me short in the first place), they almost hinted I should go elsewhere as they couldn't help and wouldn't refund.

So next month, I'm off! Then I will think about claiming back the dosh. They are so nice aren't they!

I've been on there a few times. It's a good site isn't it?

Fancy them offering the money? The pressure must really be on, and I think the banks know they are fighting a losing battle here!!!

So nancy, what are you going to do with your new found fortune!!!

I've already opened a parachute account because you can be sure when the s*it hits the fan they will close the prime account down, but hopefully after they have paid up. It's the usual practice, 'Here's your money, now get out'. Don't bother me, HSBC have been sh*te anyway :)
