View Full Version : Wages taken back
Do hope this is in the right place, sorry if its not, my wages were paid into my bank account today, looking at the account this morning the money was there, i even paid bills with it, by this afternoon the money had been taken back, the reason was because they had said i had been paid to much, they said they had cancelled the transaction on the 23rd, but the money was in my bank on the 26th, the bank are saying its nothing to do with them wages are saying its the banks fault for not cancelling, then the bank said they should not have gone back into my account with out my say so, is this true, wages were very unhelpful in fact i felt bad asking for my money.
any help would be gratfull

I had something similar happened to my friend but if I am correct, once the money is paid into your account, no one has the right to withdrew it except the bank, I would imagine it is the bank's fault in withdrawing the money paid in having commited a blunder for putting it in there in the first place when they shouldn't. However, if it is a calculation error, I would expect the company to calculate the correct amount and pay you accordingly.
If you have already made payment due to the error, you should have a word with the bank to arrange a free (it is not your fault that you spend money you see in your account so you shouldn't be paying for others mistake) overdraft if the current amount does not cover the spending commitment made prior to your wage withdrawal.
Hope this helps.

Hi thankyou for replys :)
I work for the NHS, i do belong to the union, so i shall have a word with them on monday, the money was in my account, i was allowed to draw on it, my bank would not allow me to if the money was not there, wages said they withdue the amount on the 23rd but thye could not have done  they said they had sent a cheque to my bank on the 23rd but as of yet its not arrived, but are they allowed to come into my bank and take back the money over 6hrs later. i though only the bank could do that
hope you get it sorted quickly, what a bind :(
I work for a local council and if they over pay you they have to tell you if they want the money back and that normally involves taking a bit back each month until its sorted, not all in one go like that, you must be fuming  I would be!

Hi Sammie, hope you got your money back. :)
My hubby also works for the NHS and he had the exact same thing happen with his wages! In one lot of wages he was paid too much for no reason at all and in the next lot they took a load away again! The annoying thing was he had to work a load of nights to earn that money so essentially he has had to work them for nothing really!
We have been told that it's not legal for them just to take wages away without telling you, they are actually breaking the law!
