Just seeing on the TV this morning of all those people taking stuff from the beach where the ship Napoli is slowly sinking, and thinking 'you selfish bunch of people'.
I just wondered what your views were?

To me it is stealing. There was one box which was someone's personal belongings and they just took anything of value and were throwing things aside such as personal photos.
It is not setting a good impression for this country if we are having to deal with bullying issues, racisim issues and now it seems issues of stealing.
I agree with you stoney to me it is also stealing
I watched the news yesterday with them raiding the beach and couldn't believe what I was seeing
However, these people who are so-called "salvaging" unclaimed items off the beach are being given a form to complete; but I doubt anyone will complete them.
Bonkers Mad!!!

I think its stealing as well, how can it not be? if a sainsbury's lorry crashed on the M25 and spilled its stuff all over the place, anyone caught taking stuff away would be prosecuted. so how come just because its come off the back of a boat, its ok to walk off with it?
and these people are making a great big mess on what is a world heritage site

Yes, I agree with you all, I see this as stealing/looting. Its not something i could or would do.

The scenes on TV are like something out of a not too distant futuristic movie where we are all living like animals, scavenging for what we can.
What with looting, yobbish behaviour, drunken rioting, and a crime rate that HAS to be rising, we must be the envy of the western world.
Now you tell me why anyone would want to come and live here with all that going unchecked?
It's a disgrace and a shambles.

why on earth havent the police sealed the area off?
or do they only have one copper (part time) round there, and he is on a week off? ;)

The legal position is that anyone who takes anything from a wreck site must report, to the local Receiver of Wreck, what they have taken within 28 days of taking it. This applies whenever the wreck occurred (recent or hundreds of years ago - it makes no difference). The RoW then liaises with the proper owners (probably the insurers in the case of the Napoli) and agrees what is to be done with the items that were taken. The true owners may choose to right the value off, charge the person that took it a fair market value, or even take it back into their possession. Until this decision is made I assume the person that took it is not allowed to dispose of it.
Failure to follow these rules can result in a fine of up to double the value of the items taken.
The reality, of course, is that:
- items are already appearing on eBay,
- anything with no traceable serial number is very unlikely to be reported, and,
- anything with a serial number (such as a BMW motorcycle) is likely to be broken and sold as spares.
Very few of the items taken will be properly reported.
IMHO the only reason this looting is allowed is that if the police tried to put a stop to it they would very quickly find themselves trying to put an end to a full blown riot.

Nasty thieves in my book. No excuse for taking what isn't yours and you have not earned, and anyone that takes babies nappies for their own use is just disgusting. There is all sorts of potential for contamination here, and they are missing the bigger picture, which is the 5 mile wide oil slick killing wildlife.
Sad, sad world.

My SO is from Cornwall and regards salvaging from wreck sites as part of her cultural heritage - yet in all other respects she is one of the most honest and forthright people I have ever met. It's almost as though it is 'in the blood'!
Needless to say we have, recently, had numerous heated discussions about this topic ...

its a bit like fox hunting , people think because its been done for generations before that its ok to continue with now even though most people find it immoral.
from what i can gather the people going down there are organised gangs, so i doubt very much they consider it part of their cultural heriatge (unless that heritage is to be thieving G*TS)

Like so many of these 'funny' and oddball listings it'll probably get bid up to the max (IIRC £10,000,000) and the auction will be written off.

Motorbikes + Salt water = s********!
It's not stealing it's LOOTING which is almost worse, praying on someone elses misery. Thoughtless barstewards.

I think, in future, the authorities might consider deploying the army or TA to guard against this sort of disgrace.

I noticed. :(
I guess someone must have complained that the seller didn't actually have the item in his possession.

Mine would be too lazy to go down there. He's normally sleeping in the day from banging and crashing and cooking nasty rat infested b-b-q's to do anything useful like work or pilfer in the day. So glad I don't live there anymore!
