According to Sky News, storms and gales are set to batter Britain from tomorrow:
http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,301...3563474,00.html (http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-13563474,00.html)
Time to batten down the hatches!
Yes we heard this a couple of days ago, so went out to do what DIY shopping we needed today (decorating at mo); it has been so lovely today here warmish, a slight breeze; blue sky & sunshine
So perhaps the winter weather is creeping up on us now. I suppose we need some frosts to kill of the bugs that are going round at the moment; they just love this warm weather where they can incubate
I don't mind it cold :cold: as long at we don't get snow next week as we are off down to Kent for a few days, and I would hate to be snowed in :hihi:
I hate these storms, they always worry me, especially as our house is surrounded by large trees :(
I heard a dreadfully sad story last night from my sister about the storms we had last week :( My nieces husband, [my sisters son in law], has a sister, who we have met. Well, this sister and her husband were moving to Spain last week and they had sold their house and given up their jobs. The night before they were due to leave for their new life, the husband went out in the car for something last minute and was killed when a tree fell on his car :(
It happened in Somerset and was on the news apparently :(
Goodness me what a tragedy  Just when they were goining to start a new life too; My heart goes out to his wife and family
I remember seeing something on the news last week, but whether it was this or not I cannot say.

Its been lovely here all day but very cold! Someone at school said we ve got snow coming at the weekend :( I dont mind it snowing when we are all in and dont need to go out but mr s is on nights for 3 months and has to drive back from Birmingham every morning at 4am so if the weather turns nasty i shall be worrying about him out on the roads :(

hi DG
I pray to goodness it not a another freak thing coming up
We have 70mph winds in the last day or so.
It is just British weather in general
The frosts up in Aberdeen are really horrible at the moment
The frost never lifts all day so the heating has to be on 24/7
Very hard to cope with as it is

That's really sad SP. Especially when they were all set for a new life (well sad at any time).
It was all quiet here until 1.30 am this morning. My son woke up and that was me awake until well after 4 am this morning with him, the wind battering our boat about and the rain lashing down!
I don't mind the cold. I'd prefer those crisp bright days to winds and rain. Too many tragic accidents and if my roads were anything to go by, too many maniac drivers around not taking sensible precautions and driving like lunatics!

 cant believe the wind here! Everything that isnt fastened down ive had to throw in the shed before its blown away! The trains have been slowed down on the line next to us as well. I dont know if somethings happened but theres been railway maintenece workers up and down the line all morning. By the bus stop there is a huge silver birch tree that is swaying so much Im expecting that to come down any time :(
And the river we walk past on the way to school is ready to burst its banks. It was level with the bank when we walked to school at half 8 and we have had a lot more rain since :( There was a boy the same age as my youngest leaning over the wall looking at the wier this morning - no parent in sight - we asked him if he was walking with us - i didnt want to leave him in case he leant over while no-one was about :( the river current is so fast he would have be gone  had he slipped in.
I dont mind snow or even rain but these winds cause so much damage to people and property it frightens me :(

Mrs SBIV - funny you mention windows - I work in an old mill (over 60 yrs old) and different floors are rented out to diff. businesses, anyway apparent a window has just blown out on the third floor. I actually heard it (I'm on the 1st floor in the offices) but just thought it was glass bottles in a rubbish bin being knocked about or something.
SP - Terrible news, so very sad. My heart goes out to the family................
Its also just been on the local news that a woman has been hit on the head by flying metal debris which came loose from a building as she was walking down Deansgate in Manchester. Shes hurt but not seriously, I'm glad to report.
I hated driving to work in this weather today, there really are some stupid drivers around who do not adjust their driving to the conditions.

Someone else mentioned that today. Terry Wogan read out an e-mail or something and the fellow said he was going out in his garden this weekend even if it's pouring down and watering the garden - LOL. He said he was also going to wash his car!
:( My daughter has just walked through the door from college and on her way home from the train station a branch snapped off a tree and hit her on the head :(
Poor kid - fortunately it wasn't a thick branch, but even small ones are heavy and can really hurt or injure you.
She seems ok, but Mum will have to keep an eye on her now

Popped out an hour ago to pick some kids up from 2 different schools. First school was ok, got to the second school, carefully shielding the dear little chap I had just picked up from assorted flying debris, including roof slates from the local pub, to find the pergola in the playground had lost half its roof of plastic corrugated sheeting.
The kids were being sent out from a different exit but as I was waiting another huge sheet of plastic roofing was ripped off the pergola and flung across the playground :o If it had gone in the other direction towards the waiting mums and carers it could have been awful :(
BTW, 1987 was the first ever night my then almost 4 year old slept through the night [He was a little treasure, bless him ] Flipping typical since we were up all night

That is awful!!!!! These flats are new and only just occupied!!!! We are talking entire balconies!!! The flats are converted from an old high rise office block - we are talking over 10 stories here. Magpie, you are not responsible for the wind, nobody can blame you for that! Half the country has probavly lost their fences today, let them take their photos they will look silly not you.
Dibuzz, 1987 was an awful hurricane wasn't it? I'd been out to a night club on an island near me, coming back across the bridge the car was actually being lifted up by the wind and i'm petrified of water! Then, when we got across the bridge, a tree was down blocking the road so we had to walk after that. Sorry it holds so many awful memories for you,CN
Me too CN; in 1987 I saw my neighbours caravan lifted and twisted, and I also saw our double garage that was in the process of being built fall down - the back wall and then the side wall just missing our neighbours bungalow :o Trouble is it affected me quite badly and I had to have counselling back then. Whenever there were high winds (and there were plenty more episode it's not just recently that these winds have been around!) I used to cuddle up in a chair with earphones on away from any windows until it died down - I hated those winds :(
Now I worry but not to the extent I did then; I still hate them tho

Morning all,
I hope things have settled with you all. We got off quite lightly where we were. A lot of things blown off the roof of boats and one side of ours is covered in ash blown out of someone's ash bin (just need rain to wash it off now). Our local motorway was closed, so we took the other route home, and my goodness, how damn selfish are people.
We have this road that goes up an incline and splits into two lanes. The primary reason for this is to let people over take slower vehicles like lorries etc. Anyway, every man and his dog was cramming into the second lane trying to push in and jump the queue not realising they were the ones causing all the problems. We didn't let one single car in. Got a few stares, but really, what is the world coming to when they have to fight for spaces like that. 12 people lost their lives yesterday, thousands of people are without power and there is chaos everywhere and these idiots are worried about getting home two minutes faster. I would swear, but I can't be bothered!
I heard about the little boy SP. Very sad, and a tragic loss of life, as were all those that died.
Sparrow - unbelieveable, that's all I can say. People with no thought for anything or anyone but themselves.
Magpie - glad you have your power back, must have been hard with no power. Fingers crossed your NFh don't start up. I'm sure you could use the break right now.
Now we just have to worry about the cold - get the wooly's out.
Hope you are all safe and well.
We got away without any damage - miraculously!
To anyone who had damage - don't forget to take photographs for insurance purposes, and also in case of any NFH repurcussions ;)

I dont know how you all managed magpie with no power all that time with 5 kids :o We were lucky ours stayed on - it flickered a lot so I got the candles ready but thankfully we were ok. Hope you are getting back to normal today :)
Thankfully the fences down are the only things that happened to us. The end house on the road side his fence has come away and it looks like part of the wall has too - he left for work really early so dont think he knows - Im going to nip and tell him when he gets back just in case he hasnt seen it cos he could wake up in the morning with one side of his garden missing if the wall collapses :(
Back to my idiot neighbour - I have told him he has got til monday to fix it or Im phoning network rail (have told workmen on line so they are aware but he doesnt know that  ) A couple of the neighbours with kids are going mad because although the kids that live here know about how dangerous the line is etc they could easily get on it now :( they have threatened to report him too so we ll see what the weekend brings. No but hes got being a bone idol idiot as his excuse  If one of us doesnt do something about it I can honestly say it will still be like in the summer. He has lived here a year - and cut his grass twice. I know its his garden and he can do the hell he likes but I really can be doing with idiots who just cant be bothered :( - if he was ill or disabled then yes fair enough i wouldnt expect him to do anything - we probably would have done it for him - but he is just bone idol
Can you tell im very p***ed off?!
The neighbour from opposite next door has just been over - her fence (same bit as next door but on her front  ) blew down last year and she says its the home owners responsibility not Network rail because she looked into it to see who was responsible for repairing it. It cost her £300 to sort it out. She is going to have words with him (idiot boy!) tonight because while its flapping in the wind its pulling her fence with it. :( So she is very annoyed too!
