 I wondered if anybody saw last night’s news article about wind chimes in Ryton on Dunsmore? The news article totally belittled how annoying these things can be. I myself have wind chimes but in windy weather I will strap them up or take them down complete. The article has been in various papers and on national TV; each article was saying how the council was wasting taxpayer’s money in investigating such complaints. The wind chimes shown on the ITV were relatively small but the statement from the council was there were various wind chimes when council officers visited. Personally I feel the papers and ITV are advocating annoying neighbours... what do you think?????.... councils investigating such complaints, is it a waste of tax payers money? I feel people have a right to complain to the council if they are bothered by noise and if you have been annoyed by wind chimes I would urge you to lobby the newspapers and ITV so they know how irresponsible they have been[/b]

I did see this news article and I have to say in this case it was justified. They were very loud. I used to have them at my old house, but this was because they blocked out some of the noise my neighbour made constantly (and when you have music vibrating through your walls, they make little difference).
I think more people see them as a nuisance now because they are less tolerant given how noisy people can be now we have bigger telly's, surround sound, louder stereo's. No wonder people see them as a nuisance. Some may have been put up in complete innocence and those who they anoy may have had serious neighbour problems. I know I would never use them again now I've been a victim of noise abuse.

This is something which crops up again and again on here and I do not understand why people have these things in the first place. If they like them so much, why not hang them indoors?

Sub note
I feel sorry for the poor people that made the complaint in the first place they must be being hounded by the press and TV etc. Also they are being made to look like bad neighbours for complaining... Pathetic... typical press propaganda!

I take my chimes down during the winter as they get damaged and get on my T*ts when I am trying to sleep!!
But I have to listen to my NFH's through the winter. But then he does own gnomes too!

Hi Everybody,
I see there is another thread on WINDCHIMES, each to there own, i have windchimes but not to annoy the neighbours i do know that some people hate them.
As my neighbours has a wooden wind chime so do i these are not noisy, small ones make a gentle sound and with living in the rurals when it gets windy up here i cannot hear them at all because the winds so loud.
We cannot all like the same things now can we.

We have some delightful (lol) neighbours next door to us, who when asked after the 1st couple of wind chimes they bought " could you please tie them up and take them in at night" the reply was " I like them i think i'll get more"...Few weeks on 8 chimes later clashing about every slight breeze. The only comprise our housing association has managed is for SOME of them to be tied up at night. these get NOISLY untied exactly at 7:00am in the morning. Would love some peace specially now its kind of a summer.! any ideas ?

Oh yes of course, unless you live in splendid isolation with no neighbours
I don't have wind chimes, but I have a rain chime, so when it rains it is supposed to make a nice sound as the rain hits them, unforunately they do not work :(

arg windchimes soem neighbour 3 doors down at my parents have them and they ruin the piece. It a small one but very twangy and caltter clatter at slightest breeze. I left an anomylous note but no luck. I can bare them i dont mind wooden ones but am getting seriously annoyed by these. They are out all night too. I cant see how anyone can like the sound of these metal chimes there so awful. Id rathe rlisten to the wind not artificial noise pollution i find them so distracting. The people there are ok and cant relly ask them as seams so petty but i really feel like reipping them down so bad at times.

Somehow my neighborhood has managed to not become windchime central. Thank God for small favors.

The reason most people are bothered by windchimes is that they are mass produced and NO effort is made to tune them, they are a percussion instrument, a musical instrument if you will and like any musical instrument they are jarring on the nerves when not tuned. A properly tuned windchime is a delight. And people don't hang them inside cause there is no wind to engage them, I have a grand total of 5 very pretty windchimes hanging in my house right now and they make no sound at all, I only hang the properly tuned ones outside (and I have no neighbors right now to worry about, I just don't like hearing ******** windchimes)

Wind chimes are a nightmare. My neighbours have put them up again and they are so loud, like ringing bells day and all night.I think people who want these things up should first consult with their neighbours to see if they would cause a nuisance.I think people should be made to take them down if there is a complaint about them to the council. What selfish people there are in the world.

My NFH has several big metal windchimes in her garden, the tinky-tinky kind. They never get tied up and go off like crazy if there's any wind. If we're sleeping in the back room, which we do from time to time to avoid the noise her kids make at night round the front, they're pretty loud and irritating. But this is a minor issue compared to the other problems we have with the neighbours.
I have windchimes myself but keep them indoors and just use them for decoration. I have them placed at the ends of a few curtain rails downstairs so when I open them in the morning, they chime nicely. :)

what do i do if the council i am under says the dont consider windchimes a noise nuisance? do i keep on at environmental health? as housing officer said unless i get nbor on side not much they can do even though i think it is awful clanging assulting my senses day and night and intrusive. How do i go about it officially as dont want to seam rued or say things that are not true, I cant help they drive me mad and i think it may be why she put them out as i had an issue with another neighbours chimes and seams a coinsidence she got some suddenly a few weeks later even though she had none last 4 years of tenancy, seams talking notes official route i cannot win they just dont like me and nor me them.
A I being fobbed of if they dont send them letters at least saying someone finds it a nuisance, will they at least investigate it? thanks
i feel i'm gunna snap been loud for ages and cant concentrate i just want to sit outside have windows open but it sets me on edge wish i could just rip them down but would be morally wrong and cause so much conflict, i been onsiderate over stuff they didnt like but do i get it in return no
