View Full Version : The Hand Of God Strikes Again!

I have just got out of bed as I didnt get home until 2 am this morning after having spent 6 hours in Casualty, Yes, the hand of God has struck again.
Many of you will know of my broken arm, which inadvertently set me free from my NFH situation, I have been in constant pain since having had it K- wired. My wrist bone now sticks out at 90 degrees and is very painful- I wear a splint continually- because I am always managing to knock this wonky bone! My dexterity is not good as there is still a lot of numbness in my fingers and the web space between my thumb and forefinger.
Over the last 5 months I have had 2 MRI and 5 CT scans on the damn thing the last one only a week ago.
I have been seeing a hand and trauma specialist who was going to take a piece of my hip and lengthen the bone, but he sought a second opinion ( HE was worried about the operation) and has now decided to cut off the large piece of wrist bone and insert a 10 inch steel plate down the side of my arm.
Hence all the tests to make sure everything is up to scratch before surgery. We were looking at an op before Christmas and 6 MONTHS in plaster followed by physio etc - so probably no work for at least a year- can't see how I can film, photograph and edit on location with one hand!
Bad enough as the situation is I have become resolved to it and after all - a small price to pay for being 'NFH' free.
However, last night whilst trying to slice french bread I gave myself a new lifeline!
I sliced right across the palm of the hand and deep into the muscle - headless chicken syndrome set in and couldnt find first aid kit, plasters or anything to stop the bleeding.
I ended up in casualty, I fainted twice - falling off the chair making an absolute ar*e of myself and was finally sent home with 13 stitches and a very swollen sore hand - the only good bit was the lignocaine which stopped my wrist pain for the first time in months!
Definitely the Hand of God at work - the brand of the knife I was using..... a Kitchen Devil!

You couldn't make it up P24!
Hope the medication keeps providing some pain relief until your op. Will this be delayed now whilst your hand is healing?
I'd ask them to slice in store for you from now on!!!!

I have my stitches out tomorrow and I dread it - you wouldnt believe a week could go so fast!
Good luck with that P24 :)
Yi's right, planet.
I had some k-wires in my hand last year, time to get them out i was laid on the bench for ages looking at the ceiling thinking o for g*ds sake man get on with it. He said ok done and was standing there with a pair of sparkies' pliers and the wires in his other hand! Literally didn't feel a thing. No jag or nothing.
As long as it doesnt get itchy, that's murder.
Keep safe planet and get yourself off to the sunshine soon B)
Oh I hope everyone's right about the stitches...last time I had some out was many moons ago now and it was awful but hopefully their methods aren't so medieval these days! ;)
Good luck, be brave! Maybe you'll get a sticker if you don't yell too much :D .

Snap - oh sorry that's how I got the first lot :(
I am an out and out coward with stitches etc yet cheerfully pulled a back molar out last year when I was under siege at the house and couldnt get to a dentist!
Bizarre or what ?

Well I'm back from the surgery - the nurse took one look at it and said 'Im not touching that - it needs at least another 4or 5 days. You'll have to come back'.
I'm there squirming ...it was bad enough to get me to go there in the first place but a second trip. I explained that I woud be away for a few days and wouldnt be able to come back later in the week.
Solution....... She gave me 2 dressings and a stitch-blade and told me to do it myself.
I'm turning greener by the second....Moi, who fell off the chair twice before they even touched it last time.
Somehow I think the stitches might be left in indefinitely or at least till I get back from London.

I cant do it - honestly evne looking at it when the dressing gets changed does me in.....born coward. :(
I'm not impressed with the surgery P24
I used to be a nurse and there is a technique used to remove stitches so that you don't introduce infection. It is certainly not a DIY job especially when you can only use one hand to begin with
I'll do it for you :D
I'm shockewd you're expected to take the stitches out yourself, that's terrible, I couldn't do it :(
I had 60 plus stitches in my face and I dreaded them being taken out, some were soluble that didn't dissolve - I went to the hospital where I'd been operated on and my plastic surgeon who'd stitched my face was there, he took the stitches out and was every so gentle, but they hirt like hell, I remember coming out feeling like I was going to faint, and being desperate for a can of coca cola ;)
No way you can take them out yourself, how ridiculous
P, you would also need a pair of sterilised surgical tweezers to remove each stitch. I think that is awful what she did - no way should a patient be told to DIY

Sp i am as shocked as you   what if it overgranulates and the stitches are still in, the infection could be horrid and v difficult to get stitches out at that point. Planet in no way should you attemt to take them out it is wrong that they asked you to, but on the other hand the stitches need to come out before your hand fully heals or that could lead to even bigger problems is there an chance you can call in to the local minor injuries unit while you are away i am sure they would do it for you.

All they did today was to take off the dressing and put betadine?on it, give me a couple of spare Mepore dressings and a stitchblade. I will try my best to get to a casualty unit while Im away but to be honest - I dont think Im going to be able to find the time.
Everything happens to me :(
But let's remember this is Tony Town ...DIY has always been the prime option, firstly with crime and now with the NHS.
:o never heard such a thing!!! I am shocked!
How are you meant to know when is the right day to take them out?
Can you get to your GP practice nurse before you go away for a second opinion??? Please don't leave it - your health has to come first :( .

Hi P,
Such bad news and so near Christmas too, isn't it enough to have blooming NfH without adding to your stress?
Good vibes coming you way from me and say....."It can't get any worse".!!!! (several time to yourself)
Poor, poor you.

Could it be. (and don't think to waste the GP's vallerble time over this, for he will not ken) that ye are beyond the help of medical science in this respect?
Some people, (including neandertals not unlike meself) are just differently <strike>abled</strike> nerved.
All skin, nae bone.
I ken all aboot the teeth thing. You are a hero to me.
People just don't get it.

I know a man, as old as myself, who because he'd always lived in the island until he could not work, just pulled his own teeth. With Molegrips, just like yourself.
Rig divers don't get time off for that sh8.
Walked with a stick, on account of the bubbles, and maintained that he had more children, than teeth :D
I'm still dead impressed by your grit, I wish i was half as bold.
1) get some serious UV
2) don't give up.
