Last saturday I went up to see my mum with the kids. Her poor dog (german shepard/collie x) was limping about on three legs and kept falling over. She was in such a state we thought she had had a stroke  Anyway mum took her to the vet - who shaved her poorly leg and took blood. She was also given antibiotis and anti - inflamatiories to take the swelling down from her foot and ease the pain she was in.Her poor little paw looked so swollen once the fur was shaved off - you could see it was a bit swollen but not as bad as it looked now minus fur
She has been back to the vets twice since and yesterday the blood test results came back - she has been bitten by an adder  The vet says she has had quite a few dogs in this month with adder bites - i knew they existed in Derbyshire but i thought they were more further up in the peaks (we are close to Derby).
She should recover ok from the bite but it could take a while (she is an old dog ) I have had a look in a few books and adders are said to hibernate at the beginning of october so I wonder if the warm weather we have had has confused them?
So watch out when you are walking your dog!
