The identity of the serial killer was never discovered</span>

Using their experience of modern-day crime to examine 13 different witness statements taken at the time of the killings, the team were left with a picture of someone Ms Richards described as "perfectly sane, frighteningly normal, and yet capable of extraordinary cruelty".

Mr Grieve added: "It&#39;s a popular misconception that nobody ever saw the murderer, that he just vanished into the fog of London.

"Well that&#39;s just not right. There were witnesses at the time who were highly thought of by the police.

"If we were doing this investigation today, we could pool together all these descriptions and the kind of face that the police were clearly looking for.

"You could come up with a composite and you can go beyond just a full face, you can get something that really helps the police to look for suspects."

Jack the Ripper: The First Serial Killer will be broadcast on Five on Tuesday at 2000 GMT.

It is, and always will be, a fascinating subject.

A few years ago, a distant relative died,he was an avid family historian - like me :blink: - and I heard he had been convinced that one of the victims was a relative of ours :rolleyes: His widow gave me some of his research which I tried to continue

I read some books on the subject to try to get to the bottom of the mystery and it was fascinating reading.

Looks like a really interesting programme there :unsure:

BTW, I have never been able to conclusively find any evidence that one of his victims had anything to do with my family :rolleyes: :unsure:

I think it is one of our great mysteries and in a funny way it would be a pity to be able to name the true murderer as the whole mysterious air would then be gone forever :unsure:

The pic does look a bit like Freddy Mercury though LOL&#33;&#33;&#33;&#33;&#33;

That was the most ridiculous book I have ever read. Complete drivel from beginning to end.

You read until the end :bigeyes: :)

I&#39;ve been fascinated by the Ripper case for years, I have all sorts of stuff about it & I&#39;m planning to watch this tonight too, I think the picture in the original post looks like a cross between Lord Lucan & Freddie Mercury, you sure they never got together when they were alive & had a child?

I&#39;d got as far as a chubby Freddie Mercury, but as they can&#39;t really expect a confession then we could put anyone in there&#33; :bigeyes:

And John Grieve is probably right, if the Victorian police had had computers then they could probably have cracked that one, assuming they also had profiling and modern psychiatry. The Metropolitan Police: Stating the blatantly obvious is our forte&#33; :hihi: :hihi:

I&#39;ve always been interested in JTR and found the programme fascinating. There are some evil people out there.
