i'm having a bad day :(

i dont usually work on thursdays but i'm covering my managers shift today as he's on a course. there are only 2 paid members of staff in total and the rest are volunteers. now dont get me wrong, our volunteers are highly valued and do almost everything that myself and the manager do. we have a guy who comes in on tuesdays and thursdays who is a really nice bloke, however, he used to be a top man for some IT firm and he thinks he knows everything. now bearing in mind that we are talking about ten years or so ago and that things have moved on ever so slightly and also bearing in mind that i am in charge regardless of whether he has more qualifications or is older and wiser, it is really getting on my nerves how he questions everything i do (in front of customers). he stands over me pressing keys on my keyboard, in front of customers, when he has absolutely no idea what i'm doing. he invites customers into the office (not allowed), if he cant do something he spins a load of sh** to cover it. he answers my mobile phone if it rings while i'm on the shop floor/in the toilet/kitchen  i mean, how RUDE is that? i wouldnt DREAM of answering somebody elses phone

he seems to be having a problem with a customer at the moment and i'm not getting involved, if he thinks he knows it all, let him do it all ;)

sorry, had to get that off my chest

Oh no BM.... what a pain.

Like you said, let him deal with the person on his own.

Have you spoken to him about his behaviour or is he the sort of person where it is not worth it???

:hihi: that worked

it really winds me up, my manager is supposed to have drawn up a rota for the volunteers but none of them seem to be aware of when they are supposed to be working. today i have had 4 volunteers and a work experience kid here and about 4 customers all day, now that the place is full of kids the 2 adult volunteers have left. so i now have 2 college boy volunteers who have taken over the office while i was out having a fag and the work experience girl who has sat and listened to her mp3 player all day (fair enough, there was nothing for her to do anyway). i cant say anything to them now because i've worked myself up too much, so i'm going to save my rant until tomorrow when i see the manager. maybe he'll pop in on his way home from his course but if he has any sense he'll go straight home. this place is seriously going to the dogs

Oh, the interfering twerp! I'd be sorely tempted to deck him one! I certainly wouldn't put up with anyone leaning over me and interfering like that! And as for answering your phone? That just beggars belief! ::rant: Why haven't you spoken to him about it?? If I were you, I'd probably make a complaint to the manager about all the various issues if you don't think you can resolve them yourself - and if he doesn't do anything, put it in writing! But DO try and keep a cool head and be purely factual - nobody wants to deal with personal differences - stick to the facts and hopefully he will see that he risks losing a valuable member of his team if he doesn't do something - and PDQ!

Best of luck BM :clover:

i actually dont have a problem with the guy apart from the fact that he sees me as a little girl.

my manager did pop in on his way back so hes up to date on all my issues now. he said he will have the rota sorted out by tomorrow so hopefully that will sort some of the problems out

Er..... you don't see that as a problem? OK, it's HIM who has the problem..... I still think you need to put him straight on a few things!
At least your manager seems to listen - more than some of them do!

my manager is great, he was a mate before he became my boss which makes it really easy for me to moan as much as i want. he knows exactly what things p**s me offand to be honest i do boss the poor guy around quite a bit

fortunately we both have the same level of commitment to our place of work and as we only have to answer to our board of directors (we're a registered charity) we are pretty much a team even though he is the one with the title. in actual fact, dont tell anybody i said this, work is an absolute scream. i enjoy it every day and spend a great deal of time laughing.

i dont know where they find the volunteers though

Oh dear BM, what a pain.

I've got a bloke like that in my office ... and I'm self employed

I don't know if it would be practical, but it may be possible to set up a divert on your phone, so if it rings, it can go through to your mobile when you are away from your desk.

I'm not sure how to do this, but I do vaguely remember that you can lock your mobile so that it can't be answered by an unauthorised user.

It's possible the guy just thinks he's being helpful by answering your phone, so a quiet word (if you feel up to it) may just do the trick.

Hope you get it sorted.
