Well, that is the problem - my pc won't close down :(

I need to do various updates on it and can't because they won't take effect without re starting the pc and I can't.

HEEEEEEEELP!

Kind Regards

Have you tried restarting by holding down Ctrl + Alt + Delete all at the same time - twice?

Sometimes that cures things..... fingers crossed!

Do you have a virus checker such as Norton Utilities too - try running it and see if there is some gremlin ausing a problem...

Other than that, I'm sorry, I am not greatly technical myself!

Hi,

Normally if a PC refuses to shut down it was because some process is still running and hogging the PC, pulling the plug should be the last resort because the process could be accessing your hard disk at that moment and you risk file corruption if you do that.

What I would do is press ctrl alt + del, you should get a windows task manager screen,

1) click on the applications tab, make sure no application is running, and if there are, end it by selecting it and click on the end application button

2) if there isn't any applications, click on the processes tab, sort it by CPU usage by clicking the CPU heading, the highest process should be the "system idle process". If it is, and you still cannot shut it down, then it is safe to pull the plug. If it isn't, then you have a process that is hogging your CPU, end that process by highlighting it and click on the end process button. This should solve the problem, I hope :)

Good luck

Ses

PS: Above advice comes with no guarantee....:P

Hi all

I got to amit the plug thing is the bottom line.

My hard-drive is old now and very tempremental and often needs a bit of a push.

I do agree though as to what is said that pressing Ctrl Alt Delete buttons together is the first thing to do.

If the PC is turned off wihout closing down open processes, Next time you turn the drive on, it causes the PC to go throw a Defrag process to see if the Hard-Drive has been corrupted.

99.9% of the time, there is nothing wrong with defrag. It is just a precautionary thing.

Know what you mean

you are right, 99% of the time it should be ok to pull the plug, the IT guys on BBC came to mind

"have you stop and start your PC?"

 Sorry to sound dense again, but it's a laptop - what is the alternative to 'pulling the plug' she asks cringing with embarrassment

Turn it over and release the battery and remove it ... that will shut it down.

More often than not the problems with shutting down a machine is caused by - Windows - holding on & getting it's kickers in a twist.

The most effective way of by-passing windows is this

Hit (not literally) the <Start> button and select <Run> from the pop-up menu.

In the text box that appears type CMD. A black box with some writing should appear.

This is the Operating System that runs Windows.

Type- Shutdown -r

Hit enter.

A message will appear with a timer counting down from thirty seconds. At 00:00 the computer will shut down regardless of what windows is doing.

It will then restart.

If you don't want to restart it replace the -r with -s

Well, more by luck than judgement  it now shuts down

I have no idea what I did   but a combination of your ideas and some of mine   .

Anyway, clearly one of them worked, but I don't know which one  :hihi:

Thanks for the help
