There are few threads to this story and they don't make much sense unless, I suppose, to the people who are involved.
I don't know if at the time of the egg throwing, the ex-inspector was still in the force. In which case the police might have had reason to suspect something more sinister was going on, in which case I suppose they could have argued they had a legitimate reason for the covert cams. On the face of it it does seem they used a sledge hammer to crack a nut.
So in the end who loses out? Yes you've guessed it, the poor old tax-payer again!!

This was featured in the Daily Mail today and well, it does show they look after their own.
The cost of this operation was in the region of £50,000.
Words fail me right now so perhaps I shall leave off right here.
