Just reading Don't Ever Tell by Kathy O'Beirne.

It is the true story of her as a Catholic girl in Ireland. She is abused by her Father and some local boys and then sent to a Reform school.

Then she ends up in a Psychiatric hospital.

Then she is moved to the infamous Magdalen Laundry where she is sexually abused and gives birth to a baby just before her 14th birthday.

The story follows her fight for justice.

Very, very moving and obviously not a great subject to read about, but a great tribute to Kathy and all the other women who were forced to work in these hellish places.

I bought the book in Tesco for £3.73 in their Top 20 paperback section. The cover shows a young girl with a halo.

Hi T

Was this made into a film? I remember watching something like this some time ago.......

No not this one.

There was a film called "The Magdalene Sisters" made by Miramax films.

There are a few more books and films about the subject and they are listed in the back of the book.

This website is worth a look and includes photos of some of the places mentioned in the book. Justice for Magdalenes (http://www.magdalenelaundries.com/)

They are trying to get the word Penitent removed from the graves as this means sinner.

well...
I was going to start a thread about this book but see there is already one :D

I read the book as I had been lent it

I read it in one evening as like you say, hard to put down, in the book she talked about getting a new memorial stone for the victims of the laundaries

being me, and a huge fan of google I googled it to see if she had got anywhere and how she was doing...... and to my horror and disbelief Kathy O'Beirne is a fake! :o

there are no records of her ever being in the laundaries
her siblings each independantly say she was not beaten by her father,
was not made to sleep in the shed
AND did not have a child!! let alone a child from a rape :(

In fact the catholic sisters are looking at sueing her  as her book is full of lies (alledgedly)

there are whole websites with evidence that she made it all up :( and some one has even written a book called "the truth about Kath O'Beirne"

So to me when I found this out I was mortified for several reasons.

the first being that I feel that this Kathy person has jumped on the band wagon when the laundary scandel came out to make a fast buck

I cant believe that some one could be that disfunctional that they think they can make money out of other peoples misfortune :(

either she is a greedy devious person or she needs serious psychatric help as she is disallusional

Aparently she was in a catholic school for the grand total of 6 weeks, and she did do a stint in the pshyc hospital.....witnesses say that while she was there she asked everyone questions about their lives and experiances and wrote it all done

so, was her book a combination of other peoples individual tragadies which she then put together making out that her life had been the worst ever????

There must be a lot of people out there who feel used by her and to me I feel that for one whole evening when I was reading her book she had my mis directed sympathies :(

Personally I would say dont buy this book unless you like fiction ;)

Maybe I'm just a cynic but I can believe it and have come across similar scenarios.
People saying they have been in train crashes (Paddington comes to mind) and of course the scandal over a woman who said she had been trapped in 9-11 and was claiming compensation for flashbacks, PTSD and the loss of her husband - whom she said had visited her that day and had died:eek:

Yep some sick people about who need to make money off the backs of real suffering.:(
