Terror Plot - Airport Delays (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4778575.stm)

Its all over Sky news. My friend flies on holiday on saturday and she is worried about it all - she has had to repack and put what would have been hand luggage in with their other luggage. The hand luggage was mainly stuff to keep the kids amused but she says the airport they are going from wont allow hand luggage at the moment.

If you look on Sky news website there are some interesting comments about the situation from viewers - one man does have a point though with his comment about all the passengers cramming into the airports that cant go anywhere and being kept there - putting people in danger from the possibility of something else happening - all those people in one place.

Its a very scary time :(

It is just awful, isn't it?

The latest news is that they were planning on blowing up at least 9 planes - 3 at a time at 3 intervals.

It would have been bigger than 9/11 they believe

i'm a bit sceptical about this kind of thing  . i don't trust our government to tell the truth about anything to do with the "war on terror". right now they are fighting a backlash of public feeling about Israels bombing of Lebanon and this could just be a way of whipping up some anti-arab feeling, after all, wheres the proof that they foiled a teeror attempt? if there is any, we wont see it. call me cynical but i'm not being fooled by propoganda ;)

Hearing all about this on the news this morning brought that dread feeling flooding back from Sept 11th when I was working.

I remember that day well as if it were yesterday, three months later in the aftermath I was made redundant with an International American Airline that I had been working for 16 years.

I remember quite clearly I had returned home and saw something on Sky News and phoned my Station Manager and returned back to work.

One of our aircraft was already on it's way from Tel Aviv to New York when Aerospace had been frozen. The aircraft was diverted to London Gatwick awaiting 'security', the crew had been briefed though the passengers hadn't. I one of the first to escort passengers off to be debriefed in special holding area. It was a surreal scenario I would never want to repeat or have others go through.

We can never be too careful these days.

So I'm not the only one who thought that today then,BM  I really belive Bush and Blair would pull a stunt like this if they thought it would sway public opnion  CN

I can understand being sceptical. I think is Tony and Bush turned round today claiming to be heros here, most people would rather spit in their faces. Let's face it, they are not the ones doing all the dirty work around here.

And whilst on the subject Tony old pal, why don't you get your head out of bush's behind, then perhaps other countries will start to like us again.

Don't get me wrong, I love the states, and I have a lot of people over there who I am close to and have a lot of time for, but unfortunately they happen to have one of the worst leader's on the planet and I feel truly sorry for them. I am all for uniting as one, but it's not working out that way is it.

We were toddling a long just fine before all this war on Iraq stuff kicked off. Tony is simply covering up his huge mistakes now, and he knows he's lost the people's faith (not that I ever had any for him in the first place).

It's a shame that his voice seems to send out the message that here in this coutnry we are all behind him, when clearly we are not. It's dividing people that would have otherwise lives happily together.

Sad world, it really is. I just wish all the bad eggs would go blow themselves up somewhere quiet out of the way.

Things wouldn't be much better under the Tories as they fully support the Iraq war and war against terror etc So, what are we, as the British people supposed to do?

I can't see a way out of this nightmare - where willl it all end?

Its still chaotic at the airports today - but I would sooner have a couple of hours delay and be safe than not.

My friend was supposed to be going on honeymoon to Las Vegas in November on an American airline flight but her and hubbie to be have cancelled and rebooked for somewhere else :( She says she would be too frightened to fly to america with all this happening. They will loose £170 deposit but like she says its better to be safe than sorry.

Sparrow :(

GEG - it says on sky (am sky news addict can you tell!) that the 24 held all had British passports.

Suspects were 24 British muslims, two of whom were women (one with a six month old baby and the other heavily pregnant) One of the men was a recent muslim convert having married a muslim girl, his dad was a Tory bigwig.

I hope that this does not cause trouble for the muslim community who are as shocked by this as the rest of us our. I can see idiots like the BNP using the incident to stir up racial hatred.

Please, please let us not get into an immigrant/"foreigner"/muslim bashing contest!

The terrorists are a tiny minority group who have twisted islam into sicking drivel. There are thousands of lovely, peaceful muslims in this country. Some of them may well be much loved members here.

Hi CanuckslnTheUk

Sorry no offence intended with remark.

It is just the way that the news and media sell their news.

It is drummed into the publics head that they have to think a certain way

I am sucked into this way of thinking at times as others are I'm sure

that is exactly what i meant and exactly what will/has happened.

this whole situation is sickening but unfortunately this is now the world we are living in, ok they foiled the plot to blow up planes but the people behind this intended attack will still be happy at the disruption and chaos that has been caused from it.

i see from the list of people the bank of england has published that the vast majority of them are young people in their 20s, i find it incredibly worrying that young people are being drawn into thinking this kind of activity is legitimate and desirable.

until we, as a society start dealing with the root causes of why young people feel drawn to extreme actions as a way of expressing their disillusion we will be living with this forever.

We travelled home from The Algarve yesterday. Got to Faro Airport, told only one piece of hand luggage per party but no liquids. We had already packed what would have been hand luggage in one of our suitcases. My handbag with all credit/debit cards, house/car keys, mobile phones belonging to all 4 of us so we could access them easily when we got back to the UK, phone number for the company we had left our car with - all packed in a suitcase. Guess which one of our four suitcases is still in Faro - or in Manchester? :badmood: Fortunately a friend has a spare house key and was in when we got back or we would have slept in the car for the night! When my husband reported it to the travel company at the airport it was as if they did not care. I can laugh about it now but hope that tomorrow will bring some good news that the suitcase has been found - i am lost without my mobile! Darn those terrorists!

Does anyone else remember when all we had to worry about were the "troubles" in Ireland? (Always sounded quite a quaint problem, "Ooh our Ada has the "Troubles" again). Sadly we now live in a more indiscriminate world (one of my freinds still has his letter of apology from Sin Fein after he was shot, he is Welsh and they said they only meant to shoot English Soldiers!)

Nowadays we are all targets for extremists, but should try to remember that the majority of people of all races are not bad, but there are easily led folk in all walks of life! Mad bombers and the BNP included
