I love reading the "Top Tips" sections in magazines and thought we could start our own topic on it, please add as many as possible!

I'll start with my favourite (which came from my mum :) ).

For all of you that hang your washing outside: Cut a piece of string to hang around your neck - just attach all your pegs to it. Then, when you're pegging out, they're all at hand. :)

worried about kids being seen in the winter nights?

attach free computor CDs to their coats and bags with velcro, excellant reflectors!

I have some in old wash tablet nets which I saftey pin on to my belongings during the winter months, once I get to work on those dark mornings I can de-tach them!

To get candle wax that has dripped onto the carpet off, get some ice cubes and sit them on the top of the wax for a few minutes and the wax will become brittle and crumble away to be vacuumed up.

If you are travelling and have a toddler (boy) always carry a empy coke bottle with u . it makes a wonderful toilet (wee) and nobody can have a go at you because it is sealed. i have to use this method all the time when we are waiting in a traffic jam. B)

Ummmmmm......I was going to say something distinctly 'Vernon-esque' - but I'll refrain this time as to not offend any vegetarians on the forum :) B)

The amount of times I have sat here and howled with laughter at some of Vernon's postings, I have probably lost count now.

Keep em coming Vern.

I have just been and bought myself a flashing arm band! for dark mornings as the bus drivers say they cant see me at the stop, even though I am waving at them and pratically carrying neon signs! I have been thinking since then about how many people wear dark clothing in the dark, you really cant see them untill they are close so I thought I would dig this old top tip up!

remember those old bike ads? get yourself seen! :D

A neighbour recommended this to me, so I'll pass it on, it's a sort of tip :)

In "cheap" shops, like Yorkshire Trading, Poundland etc you can buy a cleaner called Astonish, that is for cleaning hobs etc - but if you use it on a damp cloth, it brings up UPVc a real treat :)

And it does work, I bought a tub yesterday for 59p, and used it on my UPVc, it got all the black marks off (even the stains from the lead) and the UPVc looks really shiny :D  And minimum effort too

:) ...my mum used to swear by this....

If you have really unshiny tea spoons, or any kind of metal cutlery, soak them in a strong solution of hot water and washing powder for a couple of hours..they will come out totally shiny , like brand new!

anyone got any ideas on how to get through ironing faster ...(and dont say dont bother or get someone else to do it) !!

That tip, Annabel, also works on mugs and tea pots that are stained  .

And if you soak your dishcloth in very weak bleach with a small sprinkle of bio washing powder, the cloth comes up stain free and very fresh :sorcerer: .

Beth, when I was a cyclist   , I used a high visibility builder's vest thing - they can often pop up at car boot sales or charity shops for cheap. But even new ones from markets or some high st shops aren't too expensive. That might be worth investing in for your wait at the bus stop -the driver won't have any excuses then! And it is light enough and small enough to fold up and cram in your bag or coat pocket when you're done with it!

As for ironing...don't ask me, I don't even know where our iron is :o :hihi: .

Thats a good try mazza but you can't fool us, the irons in the kitchen, near the ironing board...by the neat pile of ironing,

the first step is to admit you have an iron :D

...which leads me to a related tip! .. although its not really a tip at all.

If you wear a jumper for work you don't have to iron the shirt underneath!

Theres also "make yourself drink some water" when you get back after a heavy night of drinking... dehydration is a big part of not feeling good the next day :)

My top tip for ironing is to spray everything with water all over and pile it up as you go, then turn the pile over and iron the 1st thing you sprayed - by then the clothes are touch damp and the creases disappear easily..... (how dull am I??)

And hangovers - drink a pint of water and take 2 aspirin before staggering to bed...you'll wake up fresh as a daisy :D

Ink marks from biros on photocopiers, desks, etc. can be removed by using hairspray.

Spray a concentrated amount of hairspray on the ink. Wait a moment while the ink is 'pulled' away from the surface then wipe everything away. You have to use normal cleaning spray or fluid to get the residual hairsray straight off then, otherwise you'll end up with a laqcuered surface.

forget fabreeze and shake 'n' vac, get rid of doggie smells by spinkling a little barcarbonate of soda onto the carpet/furniture, rub in, leave for a few minutes and vacuum ;)

If you spill red wine on a carpet, do NOT use: salt, white wine, vanish or any products other than pouring lots of water/soda (ideally from a siphon) on it. Do not rub!

here's another cleaning one...

micro fibre cloths are just brill, no chemicals required, just damp the cloth with plain water and glass (mirrors, windows) comes up sparkling, dusting is no problem either :) . You can get them cheap in shops like Poundstretcher etc.

Hmmm, so why don't I dust a bit more frequently then?

Ah Domestic tips, one of my fav subjects...after all, I am the Domestic Goddess!!!

Put some bicarbononate of soda down a grotty sink and then pour in some white vinegar - it fizzes up and really deep cleans all the accumulated gunge.

If you get bubblegum/chewing gum on fabric - put the fabric in the freezer and then pick it off easily.

When cleaning windows add vinegar to the water to make the windows dry smear free.

To make your kitchen smell divine, fill a small saucepan of water and bring to a simmer. Then add cinnamon, cloves, vanilla and orange peel.

Keep flour, nuts, biscuits, rice, pasta and other dried foods in tightly sealed plastic containers to stop pantry-pest beetles and moths getting inside.

Pop your dishclothes into the dishwasher for a good clean.

Germs can survive on chopping boards for several hours. Always scrub chopping boards with hot soapy water and rinse under hot running water after each use.

Always use two chopping boards, one for raw meat and a separate one for veggies.

Dry your hands on kitchen roll or paper towels NOT tea towels to avoid cross contamination.

Wipe the interior of your microwave with hot soapy water after each use to prevent a build up of dirt. Also vacuum the vents with the soft brush attachment.

Every now and then run your washing machine on a boil wash with no laundry inside. You can add a limescale removing product to give it a good clean out.
