How are we all coping in this hot weather?

Here in the London (and south east) we are set to have most of this week with temperatues over 30 degrees :wow:

I have to say that i havent been too bad this year so far , coping with it, but one thing I cannot stand is getting into a hot car! I have old fashioned air con, you know where you have to wind all the windows down and drive very fast to get the air con going

At the moment I am at work and I can see my car from the window...there isnt a shady place to park in our car park and I know the steering wheel is going to be boiling when i leave for home, because i forgot to bring a towel to drape over it  By the time I get home i will be a sweaty heap :o

I'm worried about my dogs, hope they're ok, checked they had full water bowls, water cold as possible, small windows at home are open, large ones on the latch, and I'll finish work early, get home and let them out asap, must be awful to wear a fur coat in this weather

The building here shades my car (I'm lucky I have my own parking space, same spot every day) but the normal car park is in full sun. Have windows - and proper air con - and it's a good air con system too :P

Will have to give my baskets a good water when I get home, probably top up the pond (thankfully we don't have a hosepipe ban)

But - I'm having my shower room done out  in this heat, I've had no shower room for 3 days - thankfully we have a bathroom and also an Eeyores mam who has invited us for daily showers at her house or it'd be smelly round here :P That guy better get the shower room finished tonight ;)

If anyone has a little fan at home or in the office and it seems they never blow out any cold air (they just move the hot air about), put a small bowl of ice in front it so the air will blow across the icy bowl and into your face (or body wherever the fan may be).

The air will be extremely cool then! Of course, you will have to replenish the ice but it saves buying new fans, etc. Also, you can put the fan on low and still get cool air and all your office papers aren't blown about either.

:D

I also drive an oven on wheels so the above won't help with that but will elsewhere. :D

Im melting  its so hot my grass has turned to straw and my plants are all shrivelling up (damn hosepipe ban )

the chavie dad across the road is parading around half naked not a pretty sight if i felt like eating it would put me right off my food

I really dont like the heat at all i just end up feeling 8-X so if anyone knows how to do a rain dance please feel free :errrm:

It is weird, I was born and raised in Africa, where the heat would be 98F in the shade at 8am and I could play tennis at midday without breaking a sweat.

I even lived in Egypt for a while and it was even hotter there and I never needed a siesta.

This year, here, I am drooping like a wilting pansy. Fortunately we do not have a hosepipe ban in force up here and the reservoirs are still 95percent full. I find it odd we cannot redirect water where needed in UK ... we did in Africa. Still, I get to water my pot plants each evening and if the forecast is right, get to enjoy rain on Thursday.

I have big fan on me and a small fan blasting the computer... it is really suffering! My CPU is running at 60 and forget heavy graphics, it crashes. It is no cooler outside at the moment.

Must admit it makes me sleepy.

Good thing is I love summer food, loads of salads.

Bad thing is it is too darn hot to use my lateral thigh trainer so the exercise regime is on hold.

Good thing is that I drink tons of water.

Bad thing is my poor little stray cat is cooped up inside when he should be able to find the best coolest spot in the garden.

Good thing is 20 minutes in the sun (wearing sunguard factor 40) is good E for the complexion.

Bad thing is if you don't use sunguard you are inviting disaster.

Good thing is it is genuinely too hot until late afternoon for the kids to kick ball at our fence.

Bad thing is after 5pm is it cool enough for the kids to kick ball at our fence.

On balance I prefer cooler weather.

:( Like er & Annabel I am another south east/London gal.

I hate this heat, I really do :( . It is in the 90s here and so humid, and getting hotter in the next couple of days :(

I would love to be on the coast right now and envy you folk that are

We have the hosepipe ban, using the watering can for our veg's, but our lawn is brown and so are the flower beds  http://bestsmileys.com/sun/1.gif

Definitely salads all week I think  and I am with er with the rain dance request

This is how I feel - http://bestsmileys.com/undersun/3.gif

Hi

Boiling here in sunny Kent.

But we have air conditioning at home, so a nice comfy 20 degrees in the house. :P

Went out in the car this morning though - no air con - and ended up with a lovely sweaty back and cleavage. Not very attractive. :D

I live on the south coast and am currently working 60 miles inland which takes a hour and a half to drive. It was lovely and cool at 7am this morning but horrible and hot and 33 degrees in the car park when I left the office. I was parked in the shade of the tree but the steering wheel was still to hot to handle properly.

I do have aircon in the car but I find performance drops and petrol consumption zooms up so I try not to put it on until I have to. A couple of quick bursts at traffic lights etc. I did try to remove the sun roof glass (it's allegedly removable!) but the glass was too hot to take out - nearly burnt my fingers!

Melted all the way home (even with the quick bursts of air con) to find it is only (!) 26.8 degrees C here which is much more managable - but only just!

I had to go out today, the temperture in the taxi, with all the windows open and moving, was 94!! I've got solar dermitis, comes with being a coppernob I think  so not really enjoying this weather,I just break out in hives and itch like crazy!! Even though it was so hot today,I found it more bearable then the humid weather we had the other week.My daughters off to a certain theme park tomorrow with her school ,as Mu mentioned,it's as you get inland the heat gets worse so I hope it's not too bad.CN

In the Fens it is also very hot; we have our lovely nice ex neighbours from Kent with us at the moment and we are enjoying going out and about in the good weather

We have just seen that Weds could reach at least 37 degrees - wow that's hot B)

The gardens could do with some rain tho, the trees are looking so forlorn these past few days  Yesterday I saw a tree that looked as tho it has given up - the branches were hanging low and the leaves had drooped; it was an old tree but looked in desperate need of some water! Luckily up here we do not have a hosepipe ban so I am able to water them regularly and now have many plants in full bloom and some green grass

Another one here in humid London - got the fan blowing on my back while sitting here at the computer - practically in my birthday suit :D It is sooooooh hot. I keep putting off going to bed cos I just t*ss and turn all night. I have the fan on but the whirring noise keeps me awake. :(

I've just come back from Italy (north) and although it was hot, there was no humidity - always a nice sea breeze - I can live with that - I also loved all those Gelati bars and, of course, the lovely Italian men (my man was with me so I could only look and admire :D )

Ah well, I suppose I'd better make my way to bed and at least try to get some sleep. Started a new job today and half way through the afternoon the Senior Partner came into the office carrying glasses of lovely ice cold Pimms topped with loads of fruit - said he thought we might appreciate a nice cool drink -not bad huh??? Think I might like this job. :D

Just to further emphasise the heat 'dahn sarf' when I went to collect the children I look after from the local infants school and junior school, the infants came out with a letter saying that since the temp here is expected to hit 36 tomorrow the children & parents have the option of staying at home .

Did you see on TV that UNISON are telling employers not to force people to stick to a dress code - they could end up in trouble if employees end up ill. Same should apply to schools - in fact, I would take a child out of school if they are going to insist on wearing blazers - how stupid can you get! :banghead:

You're right mazza - there's not a legal maximum temperature for working, just a minimum. But I bet if 90% of the population phoned in sick from heat exhaustion caused at work, the H&S folk would soon change that! Anyone want to name a day? :D

I have been goldpanning all day and the back of my neck is burnt senseless, despite sun lotion - I never even noticed as I kept cooling it with the water, but I'm suffering now :ill: And it's not as hot here as further south - feel SO sorry for all you guys down there!

The car thermometer was registered 35.3 when I left the office today - and that's in the shade! Actually had to hang the expense of the extra petrol and have the aircon on in the car most of the way home.

I would pop to yours for tea Yi Win but given I'm almost as dahn sarf as you can get and you're oop north somewhere, I probably would miss it!

I whimped out on shopping for tea today. Yesterday, we had jacket spuds, salad and tuna. Where I work we have a free 'concierge' service in the form of a lovely couple of ladies who'll go out and do small errands for you like taking and collected dry cleaning, paying stuff into the bank, picking up small amounts of shopping from supermarket, going to the post office etc. They're marvellous. I decided the quickest thing to cook (thereby minimising the extra heat from the stove tonight) was a stir fry. So, they picked me up a pack of noodles and stir fry vegetables. It's a great service - I shall have to think what I can send them out for tomorrow which is quick to cook

The other primary school in our village has cancelled its sports day tomorrow because of the heat :sport: And one or two parents said they have heard that the secondry school was considering closing tomorrow too because of this heat.

Today at the kids school it was the 40th birthday party with loads of activities planned outside but it was cut short because of the lack of shade for the kids - all they got to watch was 40 balloons let out from a mini on the field because the teachers were worried about keeping them outside too long esp the little ones :(

And my friend opposite has got a huge crack across her kitchen window on the back because of the heat. And where i park our car the sun beats down all day on the drivers door well the door handle on the drivers door -the metal has warped and i cant open the door from the outside im sure its cos of the intense heat from the sun

I spent all day yesterday on the patio in my bikini, i took a digital timer out with me set for 15 mins and everytime it went off turned over. Every hour i came in, drank a big glass of water from the fridge, reapplied my suncream, only factor 12, then went back out again. Didn't burn at all but have burned in the past when using factor 30 so think the key is to keep applying it and really put it on thick, don't rub it in. Whenever i felt i couldn't stand it anymore i got in the kids pool, its one of those 10ft things and i've discovered it's actually deep enough to swim in, albeit round and round lol, bliss.

i left the thermometer on the patio table and if fell over, when i picked it up it read 50 degrees!!!!! until i stood it back up then it dropped to 38!!

i flounced back in just now as i have a client to see soon, so i had no option but to get a grip...i didnt go far, just into the local shopping precinct where it is airconditioned.

man,. what a day! we have all made up now thank goodness  and we were just checking out the weather forecast, and got into fits of laughter when we realised we were getting very pleased about the temperature falling to 28 deg tomorrow (positively chilly)- we have gone stark staring bonkers today!!!

p.s. what is flystrike, eeyore? myimagination is running riot! can guinea's get it...fret fret

Eeyore
19-07-06, 03:36 PM
Flystrike is horrible, the flies lay their eggs on an animal (usually it affects rabbits, but guinea pigs can get it) and then the eggs hatch, the maggots eat the animal, I lost a bunny this way, he'd been fine, we cleaned him out every day but the flies had laid eggs inside, it was very sad

Here's a website Flystrike (http://www.houserabbit.co.uk/rwf/articles/Flystrike.htm)

Keep checking your animals, sounds awful but it can save their life

It is so hot here, and no sign of an ice cream today :(

Annabel, I'm glad you've made up at work, don't tempers fray more in the heat eh?

Milano
19-07-06, 03:39 PM
Flystrike is an awful death when fly's lay there ages on a rabbits (or other animals) messy bums if they haven't cleaned themselves properly or had a touch of the runs. The eggs hatch and the maggots eat into the rabbits flesh, extremely painful and rabbit dies from shock fairly rapidly. Very very common in this type of heat as flies are in abundance and rabbits are too hot to bother cleaning themselves as well as normal.

It was just the heat with my rabbit though, not an old rabbit only 2 but she is the 1st adult i've lost its usually the babies that succumb. My rabbits all have bottles of frozen water in there hutches now which they seem to appreciate, and i've hosed the roof down to try and reduce the temp inside. Fingers crossed i don't loose anymore.

It was so hot and still here on the south coast last night that I went to bed then got up again and had a couple of hours kip on the sun lounger in the garden  woke up not long after midnight with a stiff back and decided I'd better get back to my bed!

Was really grumpy and tetchy at work today and had to keep apologising. I just don't do Heat. Nor do I do Tired and when heat and tired are involved I'm one grumpy old lady!

The county where I'm working had it's hottest day ever today according to records. Air con on in the car most of the way back home. About 20 miles from home, the thermo in the car said 31.5 but, as I got nearer and nearer home, the temp started dropping and 20 minutes later, I'm in temps of about 21.5 - a 10 degree drop in half an hour! It's because a blessed sea breeze has picked up and there are clouds threatening but I don't care! I'm just hoping it stays this way so I can sleep better tonight.

Milano, sorry to read about your bunny....

We have a really good breeze picking up now and temp on the patio is at a lovely 25 degrees. All rabbits seem alot happier now as well, thanks for your comments, looks like the others will be ok.

I've been hearing the odd distant rumble all evening and the clouds are rolling in so maybe we are going to get the promised rain soon. I do love the weather when its hot though, i'd happily hibernate if i could get away with it, i hate winter, so depressing. Its just the way it effects the animals that worries me, oh and hubby isn't too happy with it when he has to work in it either.

last night was the worst night sleep i have had in a long time, i felt like a boiled chicken at one point as the bedroom fan had switched itself off for some reason, then i had a headache and needed to get up to take paracetamol...pah!

but when i finally got up this morning we had a cooling breeze, the temperature was 24 deg but it felt nice! :D

its so tiring though

i sympathise with everyone who has no aircon in their offices, as we dont either and after a while it is just inhuman - and noone can work properly in conditions like that anyway ;)

It`s damp and cooler up here in the north and it was quite cool last night but as I was walking the dogs in the cool this morning 2 people waiting for the bus were talking about the weather and one said to the other " well that`s the summer over then" . Isn`t that people all over :)

change for the best
20-07-06, 11:51 AM
Wasn't the change in temperature incredible yesterday?

We came out of Tesco at around 4:30 and drove home. By the time we got home the outside temp had dropped by 10 degrees C and a cooling wind had sprung up.

Last nights sleep was the best I've managed in ages.

Annabel
20-07-06, 06:31 PM
at work it was almost as bad as yesterday in there.

not as bad now i have got home. this is whacking me out, when my boss gets back from his holiday i am going to beg him to put air con in, we are all going to get heat exhaustion working in 38 deg heat every day

if he can afford to pay us a 5% bonus (very nice thank you) he can afford to invest in aircon.

I have a fan in the bedroom and i can't sleep without it on full aimed straight at me but hubby can't sleep with it on as the noise bothers him so as he has to get up for work at 5am i luck out....

At home though! Phew. The living room is nice as its open with the dining room so plenty of air flow and stays pretty cool, but the bedrooms are like little sauna's dotted round the house. I go in there, come out sweating. Yukky!

Annabels advice about the salt is good - i have felt dreadful for a few days with this intense heat even with staying out of the sun and drinking plenty of water etc. One night I went to bed feeling yuck and woke up about 2am with an awful headache every step i took my head throbbed even more as i went downstairs for some paracetamol - when i mentioned it to my mum the next day she said if i felt like that again to have a glass of water with a few grains of salt in and within an hour i should feel a bit better  I thought she was having me on but i tried it and it does work - i did feel a lot better! :D

Oh nos, you all had tons of rain and I have not... gimme!

Though I did laugh. We went to Halifax to spoil ourselves (any trip to a bookshop is heaven for me and I came out with a couple of novels, a wonderful book on Germany and with German Grammar, and Dictionary books).

Anyway a storm broke as we were looking at the mobile telephones and all the shops suddenly plunged into darkness ... total power cut. The security people went all neurotic, presumably thinking that a blackout would mean total looting and pillaging. I just laughed until I got a stitch and they got all antsy with me. Maybe this is why my neighbours do not like me too, I tend to laugh at neurosis because it is so near and dear to my heart (I am Mrs Neu Rotic at times!)

Trouble is the storm only lasted about 5 minutes ... that is not even enough to slake my littlest pot plant :(

Please let it storm more here!

Has anyone got one of those portable air con units you can buy - and if so are they any good???? [/b]

sp

i have got one to be honest they do work as long as you keep your doors and windows closed but they are so damn noisy thats the downside oh and they have to be vented to an outside wall you wouldnt believe the heat they chuck outside

i lent mine to my sister because my nephew is poorly and i dont have the heart to ask for it back

im not sure whether it has rained at all here! i went to lakeside in thurrock, essex so i could be in a nice airconditioned building (didnt work, not every shop has got it and the ladies loos were like a sweat box  ), I am pretty sure it only rained a bit over there, i didnt hear any thunder at all.

this morning i was sweating cobs, got up, had a shower, then did some housework just a bit of hoovering and floor washing and had to go and have another shower...its abo********ely chronic, and I am pretty ********tered - i think i will go and buy an aircon unit for the bedroom before I go UTTERLY INSANE!!!!!

Tonight, it's really rather cool. Inside temp is as low as 22.7 degrees C. and outside temp is a positively freezing 17.8 degrees C as I type this :D I think I'll sleep like a babe tonight.

I don't have any shorts in my wardrobe so this afternoon, in desperation, I dug out a pair of old but servicable jeans and cut them off just above the knee. I've been wearing them ever since. And no, I didn't bother getting the sewing box out and hemming them!

My children have refused to let me leave the house until I change out of them!

I wish I could persuade my oldest little mazza to let me cut his jeans down - he's such a square and the only child for miles who insists on wearing trousers in this bloomin hot wether...I don't know where I have gone wrong!!
