Some people can't handle spices well or things from the onion family.

Some are sensitive to yeast which is in breads. Some are sensitive to dairy products.

What I would suggest (if it were me), would be to cut out all spicy foods, breads and dairy products and re-introduce them one at a time and see which ones set off problems, and eliminate them one by one.

Does your friend have a special diet (as in vegetarian etc)? Just to make sure that they get the right amount of vitamins and minerals in their diets as well.

Sure this fabulous lot will have loads of good suggestions though!

Red meat would be hard to digest. Dairy products can cause problems too. I like that new Alpro soya milk, its in the fresh milk section and is really low fat as well. Sometimes its a case of eliminating one food at a time to see if they make a difference.

Could your friend be simply suffering from irritable bowel syndrome? I think she should see a GP and them perhap be tested for allergies and intolerances.

Amateur detective working by experimenting with various foods could be dangerous.

I believe that medical help and supervision is the answer

You are both totally right of course DG and banana, so please accept my sincere apologies shechem. It was incorrect of me to give to suggest anything without your friend getting checked out by a qualified doctor.

When I started the macrobiotic diet I went from a soft western diet to a really harsh food regime overnight ... bad mistake. It put my system in shock and I suffered from malnutrition symptoms after a couple of weeks of my system being unable to digest it ... so I was told.

I am really careful about swapping out foods but since I cut out butter, milk, red meat and cheese, and substituted them with second class proteins like beans and soy products I feel a whole lot less `lurgy'.

One thing the macrobiotic diet did teach me was how to listen to my body. I found if I follow a healthy diet and my body suddenly craves a pint of milk, no matter how much I hate the taste of it I will drink it.

But I have always been a believer of guidance and research. I never just believe - especially with the Web so full of information.

Another thing your friend could do is to continue to eat normally but keep a food diary and write in it everything that's eaten/drunk. Then make a note of when the symptoms are at their worst. That way a pattern could emerge which will show what foods are causing a problem.

Years ago when, when my Dad was having severe allergic reactions to something unknown, the doctor put him on a diet of plain white rice, lamb, salt pepper and lemon. Apparently these are the most unallergic reactionary things. After two weeks of this diet, other foods were slowly introduced in an effort to see which one caused the reaction. We never did find out and eventually, the reactions stopped as mysteriously as they had begun.

hi shechem

I think it is best for your friend to see a gp too but in the meantime it may help to reduce the symptoms if he/she tries to eat smaller more frequent meals rather than large meals

and buy an antiacid such as gaviscon and keep the head at a higher level when sleeping try putting a couple of blocks of wood under the feet of the bed this stops any acid refluxing into the windpipe

It does need to be investigated though its never advisable to leave things like this :)

Hi all

First i agree with what people have said about seeking medical advice,

Just to let you know i suffer with IBS and after years of trying to fathem out what irritates it i discovered the main thing that starts it off now is caffine of all kinds even in diet coke! so i have not had it for years i drink herbal tea occasionally but mainly hot water with a slice of lemon which is lovely, caffine free coke if i have it (only the pubs dont sell caffine free coke so not only do i suffer with a hangover after a night out but also IBS as nothing else goes with Jack Daniels :D ) but mainly just drink cold wate through day normally about 3 litres a day

Oh and my best friend suffers awful tummy upsets after having garlic, again any shape or form.

Good luck to ur friend
