Local is major cause of crime in neighbourhood, say police
A PUB which has been the scene of five serious assaults since December could be shut down after complaints from residents and police.
The Manston Hotel in Cross Gates, Leeds, is under the spotlight after West Yorkshire Police applied to the local authority for a review of its licence.
The police say that crime and disorder can be directly attributed to the pub, which is surrounded by private houses and that it contributes to general crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour in the area.
Recent visits by police and council enforcement officers revealed the pub's designated premises supervisor will be away from the site for three months.
This absence, according to police, is "totally unacceptable" and will leave the premises supervised by inexperienced and unsuitable people.
In a council report on the pub, a police statement says: "Because of the past and continuing problems of crime and disorder... it is felt that these premises should be supervised by persons who officially seek permission through the right statutory procedures."
It adds: "From a recent survey, police are able to establish that crime and disorder can still be directly to these premises... there have been five serious assaults at the premises since December."
Residents have complained of nightly nuisance at the pub and one local has submitted a dossier of emails to the council from annoyed locals.
One Austhorpe Road resident said: "In April I watched 25 young people leave the Manston, they were fighting, the girls were spitting and kicking and throwing punches. The boys were punching each other. One damaged my railings and the next day I found out someone had put a brick through my brother's car window.
"Five weeks before this gang from the pub ripped my gate off. Another time my neighbour found a pool ball on her bedroom floor. It had been lobbed through her window. When the Manston did not have widescreen TV and pool tables, we did not have these problems."
The chairman of the Cross Gates Watch Residents' Association, Professor Eamonn Judge, said: "Trouble in one form or another generated by users of this pub is a nightly occurrence... residents have to put up with late night rowdiness, littering, glasses in gardens, damage to gardens, break-ins, and not being able to sleep at night."
Members of the Leeds Licensing Committee meet on Friday to discuss the Manston.
They may choose to revoke the licence or suspend it for up to three months. They can also add new conditions to help curb the disorder or remove the designated premises supervisor.
If the licence is revoked or suspended, the owners can appeal and the premises will stay open during the process.
A spokesperson for the Spirit Group, which owns and operates the Manston Hotel, said: "We are aware of concerns at the pub and we have been liaising with the police and the local authorities to resolve these. We would not wish to comment further ahead of Friday's hearing."
