View Full Version : Very sore elbow

I've had an itchy elbow for the last week. Yesterday morning I woke up feeling all fluey and not at all well. The itchy elbow had a lump on it the size of a quail's egg and was painful. I washed it, treated it with Tea tree oil and spent the morning with the newspaper in the garden.

Did Tesco in the afternoon and it just about finished me. Got back and, after pleading with the kids to unpack the shopping for me, had to go bed for an hour. Felt really lousy last night and the elbow kept swelling up even more

Got up this morning and am feeling less fluey but the elbow is really swollen, hot and sore and every time it gets touched by something, it hurts. I don't think it's an insect bite as it doesn't itch particularly. I've phoned NHS Direct and am waiting for them to call back - am wondering whether I should wander down to casualty anyway. Anyone know how long it takes for the Nurses on NHS direct to call back? It's been over an hour now.

Hey ho.

ouch! comfort!

When I have telehoned them they called back almost immediately but maybe they are on low staffing level being a Sunday.

It sure sounds bad, I would go down to casualty were I you, honest!

Please let us know how it goes!

Oh MU, that sounds awful, I'd definitely go to casualty :(

I know my neighbour rang NHS Direct with a query at 9.30pm one night - they called him back at 3am  So it can take some time

Please get it seen to, sounds nasty

Take care

Ouch, sounds painful MU. :(

I would visit Casualty personally - but I would imagine it depends on how busy NHS direct is? But, if you've had the problem all week, maybe save yourself a visit to A & E and go to the GP tommorow? If you're worried though, go to A & E.

Have you also tried looking at the NHS Direct (http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk) website?

You could try resting your elbow in cool/cold water or gently holding a cold flannel or ice bag on the tender area.

Have you banged it, strained it or knocked your elbow? Been bitten on the elbow? Had the problem before? :)

Take Care.

I think its time to go to casualty. You can`t really wait when it is so swollen. At least then you will know what it is and the way to get it treated.
Be brave and go.

NHS Direct still haven't phoned back so I phoned my Doctor's surgery. I didn't realise we have an out of hours treatment centre based at the local hospital. V. nice lady has booked me in so I'm off out in the car now to get there for 2pm

Just hope I don't have to change gear too often (it's my left elbow!)

Well,

That wasn't as painful as I thought it was going to be. Though I was slightly worried when I was directed to the "limb fitting" department

Seems it's an insect bite that gone nasty. It's been smothered in anti-histamine and strapped up to protect it. It feels far more comfortable now. At least I know it's not the start of blood poisoning or somethig.

I was impressed by the efficiency of it all - in and out in about 30 minutes. Must be a quiet day on the emergency front!

Mind you, I'll probably end up with some dreaded norovirus or something tomorrow. Our local hospital is renowned for it! But I did use the gell on the way in and the way out and made sure I touched as little as possible whilst there!

Glad you went, and glad it was swift and relatively painless.

Hope you have a quick recovery!

How's the elbow today MU? And how do you feel in yourself? Worrying that you felt fluey, sounds like some poison way have got into your bloodsteam.

Hoping you feel better :flowers2:

Hi all,

And thanks for your concerns. I've felt much better, physically, in myself today (almost firing on all five cylinders!). The elbow is much less swollen and almost back to normal but there's still a very tender bit (which doesn't like being touched) and a couple of red bits which should disappear in the next day or so.

Damned insects indeed - that'll teach me to sit out at the bottom of the garden with my neighbour and put the world to rights over a G&T or two on a friday night!. Either that or drive past the infamous river Stour and its Blandford Fly with my car windows open!

As to the pampering from the kids Marieuk. I exaggerate when I say they are kids because they are now Adults (i.e. over the age of majority) and have been for some years! But, they still live at home. And, consequently are still 'kids' to me!

I keep asking them when exactly are they going to leave home but they haven't come up with a satisfactory answer yet! (Even though my son has married and promptly moved his wife in with us).

But I think I've had my 3 bad things this weekend. There was my elbow, my daughter's bloke's Mum was rushed into hospital back end of last week (daughter's bloke was visiting his Mum at the same time as I was at the out of hours surgery at the same hospital) and has had the diagnosis given today of 3 tumours on her brain. She's already survived colon cancer and lung cancer so it's difficult to see how she'll survive a third bout somewhere else....

And, my best friend down the road who has a large pond full of koi etc. phoned last night to say they think the pond water has been poisoned. They've lost the majority of their big fish and a lot of the smaller ones are not too happy at the moment. I'm cautious on this one but it could, possibly, still be retribution from the planning thing that some of you know about.

But, hey ho, onwards and upwards, tomorrow is another day and all that and I've got it all off my chest so thanks for listening/reading.

Take care y'all
