A ROW has broken out between neighbours after peacocks allegedly caused £10,000 damage to a 4x4 vehicle.
John Benstead and Jerry Briant are at loggerheads in sleepy Rosemary Lane, Fairlight, and the dispute has led Mr Briant to relocate some of them.
According to Mr Benstead, there were 13 wild peacocks in his and the neighbouring garden when he moved in two and a half years ago. Now he says there are only four.
Mr Benstead said: "They are beautiful creatures and people love to come and look at them and take photos. It would be terrible if they all disappeared."
He is in dispute with his new neighbour, Jerry Briant. Mr Benstead says his neighbour moaned the peacocks had caused £10,000 worth of damage to his wife's new 4x4, and he was sick of the noise and mess.
Quinten Spratt, a leading peacock expert, said it was possible the peacocks had caused such damage.
He said: "Male birds see their reflection in the paint work and attack the car thinking they are attacking a rival. They have razor sharp talons and the damage is similar to a car being keyed."
Mr Briant told us that the peacocks had been relocated, but wouldn't say where, and then slmmed the phone down.
Clare Kennett, a spokesperson for the RSPCA, said Mr Briant had gone to a wildlife centre in Fairlight and had been advised to relocate the birds to stately homes in the area.
