Hi all,

Wondered if any of you lovely lot had any suggestions for helping a headache without the use of painkillers?

My problem is I have a neck injury from a car accident I had nearly four years ago. It's better than it was, but flares up now and then, and I only have to have slept badly, slept on my right side for too long (which I can't do as it's very painful) or have lifted something slightly too heavy or wrongly and it sets it off.

My neck muscles go into spasm and knot up. My left side is particularly bad, which puts me off centre which then gives rise to back ache, plus the muscles being tense then set off tension headaches which start at the back of my head and slowly filter all over until just behind my eyes.

Trouble is, because of taking so many painkillers at the start, my stomach became so over sensitive, if I take them now, I get seriously stomach problems, so avoid them at all costs unless I am desperate (such as when my headache has been going for several days).

I am a full time computer user, plus carry around a 20 pound baby the rest of the time. I do take regular breaks from my PC (have to), and try not to lift anything etc unless I have to, but I wondered if you had any practical tips or remidies for helping a headache without the need for medicines.

Mr SH does give my a shoulder rub, but it only helps temporarily as the muscles take days to relax again.

Any advice would be welcome (on day 3 of current headache and not enjoying it!).

hi stonehenge

I suffer from severe headaches which last for days sometimes so i sympathise ive never really looked for an alternative to pain killers but try not to take them unless really necessary

maybe a trip to the local health shop and try to find something herbal that could help

im sure others will have more advice maybe some one will know about things like accupuncture and other remedies

take care :)

A couple of things have really helped me - one thing is a lavender heat pad, it's like a long bag thing filled with lavender, pop it into the microwave for about 1 - 2 minutes and then place it onto the affected area, head, sore muscles etc, it relaxes you and the pain does go away, I recently had a trapped nerve and this helped immensely B) You can buy them at health food shops, online, herbalists, or I guess could make your own if you feel adventurous :D

Yorkshire punch helps too, it's a natural remedy and great for headaches, migraines (which I get), stress etc, you can buy it online here (http://www.punchbrew.com/) and I highly recommend it.

Must admit though the one thing that always works for me, and I reach for it without fail, is plain old aspirin.

They work for me too Eeyore, but the repercussion on having it are sometimes not worth the risk, which is why I try to avoid them if I can.

Great suggestions about the lavendar bag though. That sounds lovely. I might get one of those, and I've never heard of Yorkshire punch. Also a good thing to try!

I would also love to hear any tips because I get horrid horrid migraines and without my tablets I really cant cope! Other times I get tension headaches that worry me in case they turn into migraines and its those kinds of bad heads I would love to be able to deal with without necking tablets! :(

I'm a migraine sufferer too. I rub lavendar oil on my temples and sprinkle some on my pillow which I find soothing. Tiger balm on the forehead can be useful too (you can get it in health shops or chinese shops).

Tell your other half to stop trying to get romantic. DG's headaches always come on whenever I'm feeling frisky!

:hihi: :hihi: :hihi: Lol at Mr DG!!

I can definitely recomment the lavendar wheat bag that you heat in the microwave, especially if you suffer from neck muscle spasms. Hubby uses one and finds it helps.

Thanks everyone. I really need it now! After putting up with pop songs last night from next door (dad's away, daughter will play), going round to ask her to turn it down (which she did), but then banging about for an hour to show her displeasure, then being woken up twice with little one during the wee hours, then having the driver from hell almost causing an accident by cutting in front of me (thought he was really clever), my headache is now reaching epic proportions, so I need some pampering!

Oh for the simple life!

Thanks for tips, I am definitely getting one of those lavender bags. They sound just peachy!
