My situation may, to some, seem rather enviable but I need to make a descision soon over my future.
Here's the deal.
Currently I am employed, but through the business I work for, I have no work to do. This is know as being "On the bench". I can be OTB for 12 weeks before anyone will be bothered. It's up to me to find a new job within the business and whilst I sit at home I still get paid.
But. I don't like sitting around and even the garden is not enough of a distraction to keep me going for 12 weeks.
I had an interview yesterday for an external job and I'm in the running to get it. It'll mean a 3-4 k per year raise if I took it.
However, if I sit tight and wait I could get release from my existing employer of 1 years gross salary. This is not on offer at the moment.
I need to decide what to do .... sit tight and hope I can take redundancy then look for a new job or take a new job and kiss goodbye to a large sum of tax free cash.
Advice please.

Hi there :)
Hmmmm, difficult one........how long have you been OTB so far. You obviously haven't got a job offer for the new job yet, any idea how long it would be before you know? That would obviously count towards the 12 weeks. Also it wouldn't be unreasonable to say to your new employer that you need to give notice from the old job - 4 weeks minimum, could you potentially stretch that out a bit?
It also depends on how secure you think the new job will be, and whether the extra 3-4K would balance out the potential loss from the current job?
I wouldn't want to be in your shoes, very difficult, but if the new post looked good and secure, I think I'd go for it personally.
Let us know what you decide, I'll be interested to know!
Good luck

It sounds like a nice position to be in doesn't it, but the reality is always different. It depends on the type of person you are. For me personally, knowing that I have a housefull to pay for means, I would not want to be out of a job for long, and probably wouldn't risk waiting to see if I got made redundant and had a good salary. I would hope the other job came off and take it.
Even if it didn't seem something you might do long term, it's all good experience, and there is nothing stopping you from looking around to see if you get a better deal.
Money is important in terms of being able to live and afford to live, but not important enough to me to warrant waiting and hoping. But then I am not you, and if you feel that having that money there, meaning you can live for a year without working, then it would be a good deal, so you can take your time to find something you really want to do, or even re-train in something you've always wanted to try.
Tough call, and I don't envy your position, but I think you know yourself better than anyone and what you could cope with. A big decision, but one only you can make after all. If it was me, I think I would see how things pan out with the new job, and see if you get it offered to you. If the 3 or 4 k rise is for the good of you, and it doesn't include you having to do more commuting, longer hours etc, then it might be a good thing!
Anyway, I have probably more than confused any sense you had about you (so I'll shut up now). Good luck with what you decide to do!

CTB, in my experience, OTB is soul destroying and worrying. There's no guarantee you'll find a new position in the current company. Yes the idea of 1 years salary is tempting.
BUT because you have a job offer in the hand, potentially, at an increased salary - I'd take it and now! But, at the end of the day, only YOU can really decide.

Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I really wanted confirmation that my decision to take the job if it's offered was the right thing to do.
Mrs CFTB says it's worth taking a chance and although the redundancy cash would be fantastic my future career is more important. Maybe the fact that I'd be away a few days each month in Tel Aviv has something to do with it as well:).
I'll post as soon as I know if I have the job ...... here's hoping

Well I didn't get the job offer even though I was the best candidate for "technical ability". It seems they were concearned that I would quickly get bored with the tasks they would have expected me to do.
I did wonder, when I was answering a technical competancy question, if this company was worth the effort when I corrected the software test manager who'd got the answer wrong himself.
Ah well, there are many more oppourtunities out there and I'm sure I can potter around the garden for a few more weeks.
Thanks for all the advice though .... it really helped me make up my mind.

Hi CTFB, I didn't catch your thread in time...
Sorry you didn't get the job but I gets that decides it for the time being.
Personally I would wait for the redundancy if I thought it was a cert that I'd get it. You can get the first £30k of any redundancy payoff tax-free can't you, and I hate giving money to the tax man. But my situation is probably different to yours, I don't have kids and hubby is working too, so not so much pressure on being the breadwinner.
It's a difficult time for you, I hope it works out for the best

Well here I am nearly two months later and I have now got a role with my current employer. Dull as dishwater and totally pointless but at least I'm doing something (until the end of July at least).
BUT ..... Here's the better news! :D
Tomorrow I have an interview for a specialist software consultancy who are offering nearly double my existing salary! All that stands between me and a 100 mile round trip each day is a flippin powerpoint presentation.
Maybe now things are gonna go right for me ...... B)
fantastic!
the best of luck with that, will have fingers and toes crossed for you :clover:
Good luck ! Wishing you all the best with it all :clover:
