Hi all,

As you know I suffer from bouts of Tonsillitis quite often and end up quite poorly because of it.

I read an interesting article in the Mail's magazine at the weekend written by a Doctor about things you can try to combat it throughout the year. It was in reply to a lady who gets it twice a year and ends up on antibiotics the same as I do.

He advises:

Suck a tablet of Kuka (Multani £4 for 100 Tabs) twice a day for 15 days. It is a natural supplement with clay properties and an antibacterial agent.

Take Zinc, one 15mg tablet daily for 2 months (Biocare Zinc Citrate £4.60 for 90 tabs)

Put two drops of sinus oil in each nostril at bedtime for one month.

Gargle with salt water once a day while infected.

Drink plenty of lukewarm water.

Massage throat externally with Peppermint Oil.

I also use Tyrozets from the pharmacy (over the counter) these have a antibiotic in them, numb your throat and can be sucked 6 times a day.

If any one else has any tried and tested remedies, please add!!

I also do the gargle salt water thing. Whilst it tastes bad, it does have an immediate effect.

I also drink ginger and honey mixed with hot water, as this is extremely soothing and ginger is very good for colds and infections.

I find I need to constantly suck something when my I have tonsillitis, so I tend to go for wine gums (good excuse to eat sweets), as they are soft so if you swallow a big bit by accident, it doesn't hurt as much!

I have used Vicks Chloraseptic (sp?) before to, which does help when it's really raw!

I can also recommend the ginger and honey. I have one of those 'tea ball' things so I chop up some root ginger and put it in the tea ball, then let it infuse in a mug of boiling water for 10 mins or so. Then add honey to sweeten and soothe. If you have got a really bad cold on top you can do this with a bit of lemon juice added.

My ex-boss used to swear by gargling with TCP (yuk!!).

Personally I can't stand sucking Strepsils, Soothers and the like. I find after a couple they make me feel even more ill (and coat your teeth in cr*p). Although the strepsils with the mild numbing ingredient are good but you have to keep them right at the back of your mouth all the time otherwise you get a numb tongue.

It's a shame that they don't recommend removing tonsils anymore. I can understand why, I know it's part of your immune system and all that but if you suffer continually then they should remove them. A lady I used to work with had a daughter who suffred constantly like you. It was only when her throat swelled so much that she couldn't breathe that they decided they would remove them. She could have been saved a lot of misery a lot earlier, poor thing.

I hope you feel better soon honey x x x

none of the above!

PINEAPPLE!!!!

it has an enzeme in it that kills throat germs

as long as you are not allergic to it you can suck fresh chunks or garlge with the juice and most of us have a spare tin of it in the cupboard

if I ever get a sore throat its the first thing I reach for

hope its not giving you too much bother :flowers:

I also read in the article that we have 5 tonsills arranged around our nose and throat! The two at the back of the throat are the ones that mostly get inflammed.

Feeling slightly better today and can nibble bits of food now. Drinking is alot easier too. Water - not wine :D

I gargle with soluble aspirin when it's so bad that I can't swallow. The pain is taken away for long enough to have a bowl of ready brek (easy to get down past the throat) .

I also tend to wear a scarf, keep the old neck warm - whatever the weather, indoors and outdoors.

Lately, I have found that Vick rubbed on chest and throat helps - but in the past it didn't do a thing!!

I've always got a tender neck...it's horrible.
