Natural products are studied in great detail, but only in an attempt to make synthetic analogues with increased or different efficacies. If this is not possible, they are normally shelved.[/b]
I've often wondered that if the 'active ingredient' in a plant is isolated it might be less effecacious (sp?) or could possibly be toxic whereas the whole plant might contain substances that could offset the toxicity or enhance the 'active' ingredient.
But I agree there are, must be, many dedicated scientists, but who funds their research and who decides the parameters of their research? And who decides how much of their research is released? I read a very interesting story in the Mail on Sunday about the scientist who 'blew the whistle' on gm foods. He was sacked within 48 hours after he spoke out; after Clinton spoke to Blair via telephone. The stress caused two heart attacks and the falacious reason given for his dismissal was later rescinded but it was too late for him, he is a broken man. Of course Monsanto is extremely powerful in the US not just in the biotech field but in funding politicians. The FDA licensed aspartame after pressure from Rumsfeld and now lots of studies are showing just how dangerous it is. Who knows what else they've licensed after some 'pressure'.
As you say, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Thing is, pharmaceutical firms can be so powerful that even if they are sued they can make it difficult for the ordinary person on the street to get redress and they can offer huge inducements to keep cases out of court.
Although slightly off-topic, I read a horrendous account from an American mother and the hell she went through with school psychologists who told her that her son had ADHD. They insisted he be put on ritalin followed by other drugs. If you want to read the story it's at http://rense.com/general38/drugged.htm I found it truly awful.
It's strange how all these new illnesses have appeared seemingly out of nowhere, or things that weren't considered illnesses now have drugs to 'treat' them.

Does reality as we know it shift into this alternative world of altered consciousness and what are the consequences for non-users who become the minority? Would the natural, non-drugged person be hounded as "abnormal" by the rest. I am sure the effects are more subtle than that, but you get my gist?[/b]
A very valid point, Badger. Most people perceive the world at 'face value', but what if it's not like we think it is at all - a Matrix maybe http://www.nfh.org.uk/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif There are so many things that can affect your perception, drugs, alcohol, illness. Far too big a subject to discuss here, but very interesting to think about.
Has anybody heard about TETRA, the new communication system for emergency services? Apparently it operates on the same wavelength as the human brain and there is a lot of talk about it being used for more than communication. Seems they've been using it in the Lancashire area for a while and there have been a lot of complaints from police officers about it's adverse effects on their health. It's been claimed that the CIA used it in their mind control experiments at MK-ULTRA.

Ok, I love conspiracy theories, joining the dots etc. But after what this government has done, lying about reasons for going into Iraq, it does make you wonder what the heck is going on.

Now add to this the seeming insistence by the government on adding flouride to water one gets a very uneasy feeling. Prozac, btw, is derived from flouride and there have been a few instances of people going 'postal' after they've taken it. Flouride was added to the water in concentration camps as a means of control, keeping the inmates 'zombified'. Think of all the flouride you'll be ingesting from: water, toothpaste, tea, grapes etc, and children who receive flouride treatment from dentists.
Imagine if we're all zombified by TETRA and flouride. Governments wouldn't have to worry about popular uprisings against unpopular policies. Plus there are all the physical effects from all this. We are living in interesting times http://www.nfh.org.uk/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
