The antics of noisy and disruptive neighbours are often the butt of jokes, but for those who live next door it is no laughing matter.

Thankfully action can now be taken against those who continually disturb their neighbours' lives. We find out just how badly an anti-social neighbour can impinge on normal life by speaking to two people who have first-hand experience.

Rebecca and Edwin Little had lived in their flat for 17 years without any problems.

But when a young woman moved upstairs their lives were made complete misery which eventually forced Edwin to take refuge in the garden shed.

Night after night their new neighbour would blast out music by artists like Atomic Kitten and Belinda Carlisle.

Rebecca, 45, of Peebles, said: "It was utterly miserable.

"Noisy neighbours are sometimes considered to be a bit of a joke but until you have experienced what it is like you can never understand just how terrible it is.

"When you live in flats you do get used to a certain amount of noise and obviously everyone throws a party on occasion, but this girl was just unbelievable.

"To start with it was only at the weekends but it soon became every night.

"We would go to bed and it would be quiet then just when we began to think we might get a good sleep, at around one or two in the morning, it would start up again.

"A council worker came to fix our shower one day and he had also been in her flat for some reason and he said she actually had the speakers turned towards the floor so it would be even louder.

"It really was complete misery and came close to driving us to despair."

Noise was not the original problem with their neighbour.

The young woman never took out her own rubbish and each week Rebecca would kindly do it for her. But when she developed a shoulder problem her husband said she should stop and the rubbish piled up week after week.

Rebecca said: "When we mentioned it to her she said it wasn't hers but she was the one with the baby and there were dirty nappies lying everywhere."

Over 18 months the shared garden also became littered with used condoms and the waste food the young woman had thrown from her upstairs window.

She would also shout torrents of abuse at the couple.

The visits from her brother also became an issue as he would come over drunk, kick the fences and then try to break down the door to get in.

But it was the noise which caused the couple the most misery. Rebecca said: "We were constantly on edge wondering what had to get own with things as normal except we were like zombies.

"I was put on sleeping pills but even then the music was too loud and my husband actually ended up in the shed when things got too bad."

Eventually the couple ended up staying in a hotel room.

The young woman was finally evicted and the Littles were able to return home.

Rebecca said: "They do say silence is golden and it was absolutely wonderful. In fact the whole atmosphere of the street changed once she had gone."
