I've a small pond in the garden, one of those pre-formed things. Last year had quite a few frogs/toads. Noticed last night that there what looks like a newt. I know some of the neighbours have ponds. Does anybody know anything about newts? My dog is very interested she sticks her head in the water, tail wagging

On some of the sites we look after at work, we have newts. Here's a link to the newts we have round here (my be helpful) Newt website (http://www.wildlifetrust.org.uk/durham/Reptiles/newts.html) and this one has a few decent pictures of newts here (http://www.marinebiology.co.uk/newts.htm) does it look like any of them? :)

I have newts in my pond as well, they are lovely things, I just leave them to their own devices to be honest as I dont know anything much about them. There were some babies last year, so I must be doing something right!

Mine are the common sort as well :D

Last Summer, a teacher at my daughter's school gave us some froglets the kids had in their classroom, I had about 6 of them and let them loose around the pond and havent seen hide nor hair of them since :( I suppose they all died or got eaten or something :(

Bonkers Mad!!!

i think ponds have to be just right for Newts and you can consider yourselves lucky if you have them. they're quite fussy when it comes to selecting laying areas

Looking at those pictures I would say it was the common newt (nothing posh in my garden). I only put the pond in about 12 months ago to see if it would encourage any wildlife. Most people when they move house decorate. I buy a bird table and a pond :hihi:

I'm still thinking about that one, I know I should get it - but I don't!!

I don't have a newt, but one of my cat's is called Newt!

A virtual pint to anyone who can guess where her name came from!

(Clue - my other cat's called Jonesy)

They're not Great Crested newts are they? If so: " They are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Habitat Regulations Act of 1994. It is illegal to catch, possess or handle great crested newts without a licence and it is also illegal to cause them harm or death, or to disturb their habitat in any way."

You'll have to turn your garden into a nature reserve! :D

Some info here (http://www.herpetofauna.co.uk/great_crested_newt.htm)
