View Full Version : Kitchens Direct
We have put our house move on hold for the time being and we are looking to buy a new kichen. I have just spent the last 2 hours with a man from Kitchens Direct. Has anyone ever dealt with them or no anyone that has? If so are they any good?
Thanks for the reply banana. We were quoted 6000.00 and that included fitting, hob, double oven & dishwasher. I think I will have a bit of a shop around. Mr T nearly signed on the dotted line but a swift kick in the shins soon put a stop to that.
P.S. Can I borrow Mr B to fit it ;) . If Mr T can't do it with a hammer then it doesn't
get done

Hi Tact, I have used MFI on several occasions now and found them to be very good, I didnt think their fitting charges were too bad at all...did the whole kitchen in my old house for 4k, everything included, all the units, tiling, electrics plumbing, gas, appliances etc etc...
just used them on another project, we just got them to plan out the kitchen then we had a builder install it...the cost of MFI doing it vs our builder was very similar actually and and least MFI give a bit of a guarantee. in retrospect i should have used MFI, but the builder was there doing other stuff so it was more convenient to keep going with him. :)
I dont think 6k sounds all that bad if its everything included but it does depend on how big your kitchen is... :)

I knew someone would say how cr*p MFI are...I am even rather amazed myself that we have had such good service.
But honestly, they really were great! :D
Thanks for all of the replies. I have just spent 3 hours in MFI  . They have quoted me 4200.00 for all of the units a dishwasher, washing machine, hob, extractor and double oven. Also the lights that go under the top units (not sure what they are called). Fully fitted.
I have no idea about Kitchens Direct, but unless your kitchen is really huge, 6k sounds very steep to me  .
B&Q kitchens are really quite good quality, I was impressed with them. it is quite straighforward to use them too - everything is logically placed in the store. If they do fitting now, even better :D .
I only had one experience of a ''kitchen fitting'' company and that was Moben kitchens - please don't touch them with a bargepole - ruddy expensive, ruddy awful and ruddy rip off!! :toilet:
Someone I know rates MFI too - they have maybe got their act togather these days then! They seem to have a large choice anyway  .
Good luck, it's hard to make a decision of such importance, isn't it? :clover:
I have ordered it from MFI. I am very excited now but it will not be fitted for 10 weeks. This is the first time I have ever had a new kitchen, one to my taste and I can't wait. :D
I really hope Mr T doesn't expect me to cook in it...

Sounds great tact - but what made you put the moving plans on hold?
Just opened our local newspaper and on p.3 there was a big write-up on how bad Kitchens Direct are. I am so glad I went with MFI now.
Kitchens Direct had knocked a hole in her wall - straight through to the outside and instead of mending it they filled it with bubble wrap. They also fitted her washing machine incorrectely and it leaked all over her floor and has ruined her tiles.
Phantos, Mr T wants to see how the business goes this year before we move. We have only been up and running for 12 months and he is a bit scared that if all does not go well this year we might have a mortgage that we can't afford. Personnaly I don't know what hes worried about its going really well, but he has always been the sensible one when it comes to money. On the bright side it will give us chance to build an extension on this house and add more to the value.

Fair do's tact, sounds like you are being cautious.
Well done on avoiding Kitchens Direct btw!
Today is the day my kitchen is finally meant to be fitted, the house is a mess, I can't find anything to feed the kids because I have had to empty al of the cupboards so they are having to eat bananas.
The fitter has not turned up yet and will not answer his mobile. All I can say is I no its early yet but he had better turn up or world war 3 will be breaking out in MFI today.
Flippin heck tact, it's not good enough is it? :( What time does this fitter start work?
I'd give it until 10am, more than generous and be on the phone to MFI, you can't live with your life on hold like this
hi tact
sorry you are having a stressful start to the day hope they turn up soon it cant be easy with two little ones at home
at least you will soon have a nice new kitchen and a good excuse not to cook tonight

Gosh, I am even feeling nervous for you now!
I hope they turn up. I hope we will be treated to pictures of this lush new kitchen as well.
I've never had a fitter in for mine, as they were all OK. Not something I will have to worry about on a boat however! The kitchens is small enough not to be expensive int he first place!

I think he must have arrived, either that or tact is in MFI raising all kinds of Hell!
Let's hope it's the former :P Don't see anything on the news about mass slaughter at MFI

i feel bad - as I sang MFI's praises as well
Sorry I didn't reply earlier. He did turn up at 10.00 but I had to take the kids straight out as there was so much dust and Little Master T has astma.
He managed to strip the old kitchen out and put most of the new cupboards back in but no doors or work surfaces. He did really well. All the electrics have been done.
It will def. have to be a take away tonight as I have no cooker or sink. So kebabs on a paper plate it is. :D
Phew, that's good news then tact - bet you are looking forward to your new kitchen being completed :D

I can't wait. I am so excited might even have to cook in it on Friday :hihi: . I spent most of the day looking for new things to buy to go in it as we have decided to bin most of what we own and have it all new. Sad I know but it is our first ever new kitchen.

B)  tact, that sounds great - he will most likely be finished tomorrow,eh? excellent!
dont feel guilty about chucking out your old stuff and getting new, i am doing the same, getting rid of so much stuff before we move...i think its entirely sensible! :)
have you heard of 'Freecycle' - you can offer your stuff on this website and people come and take it off you - the only stipulation is you have to offer it free- you would be amazed what people will take off your hands...saves it going into landfill or an incinerator - i have got rid of a few things i couldnt sell that way  makes you feel like you are doing your bit for the community as well :D

Ooh Tact I am jealous... we have had to make do with painting the walls and tiles and replacing the door handles for now. Also we are going to rip up the carpet and treat ourselves to some nice new lino (whoever thought carpet in a kitchen was a good idea needs shooting).
Let's hope they get it finished on time so you can start enjoying it :D
LOL @ DB
Annabel, I think he will be still here on Friday as I have got them to do all of the tiling as well. Freecycle is ace, I think I might be putting my dishwasher and machine on there.
phantos, carpet in a kitchen, yuk. Painting and changing the floor is a great idea, my kichen really needed to be ripped out, the doors kept falling off and the drawers would not open.

Great news about the kitchen tact!
I have never heard of freecycle Annabel. Do they take anything? I might use them if there is stuff a potential buyer doesn't want that we can't take. Like you say, doing your bit and all that!
Can't wait to see the piccies. I would also buy new tact. New kitchen, new stuff, it has to be done!

thats exactly it dibuzz, and you can ask for things you want as well, we asked if anyone had a lawnmower and within a few hours someone offered us one that was just the ticket...we have collected it and it was in perfect working order!
anyway we are going off topic here a bit! :D but do check it out, its a good website!
Well my nightmare is not finished yet!
MFI did not deliver door handle, cables, shelves, sink waste unit plus a few other items like cupboard bottoms. So you can imagine my kitchen is a joy.
Good news the dishwasher and washing machine work.
They are going to post the items out sometime this week, then I have to arrange for the fitter to come back which he can't do for a few weeks.
My advice to anyone looking to upgrade your kitchen, don't use MFI!!!!!
Help needed please
I need to write to MFI and need a good start for my letter.
I used the washing machine yesterday and it vibrated so much it fell of the base and nearly landed on Little master T it was just lucky that Mr T was back from work and managed to catch it!

Ohh nasty!
Well, I am not sure quite how polite I would like to be with them, but my usual start to complaints start with,
To whom it may concern,
I am writing to you with regards to the recent kitchen you fitted for me at (insert address), on (insert date), and I am more than disatisfied with the service that was provided to us, as it seems the job has not been completed to the high standard I would expect from an organisation such as yourselves.
On (insert date), I used my new washing machine for the first time, and was not expecting to have any problems. However, as the machine began it's spin cycle, the vibrations were such, that is came off it's base and toppled over. It was only the quick thinking of my husband that prevented a serious injuring occuring to my young son. This left my son very distressed and both my husband and myself extremely unhappy and angry that such an accident could have happened.
Blah blah........
Something like that anyay!

T how awful,  i hope you get it sorted soon, the sooner you write that letter the better!!! let us know how it goes and if you get a good response from MFI
love Muk xxxxxxxxx
I also found out that MFI forgot to order all of the parts that are missing (even though I has phoned them 3 times and visited the store twice) and they will now not arrive until the end of June.
I have written both letters, 1 to MFI head office and 1 to the finance company.
B, I have now spoken to trading standards and I have to phone them back in 7 days if my kitchen is not finished to my satisfaction.
Does anyone know what the next step is after the seven days?
Thanks for all of the info B.
I have mentioned the TS in the letter and how they have advised me that 7 days is more than enough time to fix the kitchen. I am so annoyed about it all as I was so excited about getting my first new kitchen in the first place. I did mention the fact that Little Master T was nearly squashed and that really interested TS.
MFI on a whole just do not seem interested, when I phone I get a lot of ooohhhh thats not good but we a re really busy so hopefully someone can phone you in a few days!!!! I ate the head off the admin centers boss yesterday (I am much better in person than I am typing LOL).
Both the finance company and MFI should recieved their letters today and they have to sign for them so they will not have the excuse of not receiving them.
I am expecting the electrician today to come and make the fuse board safe as it is overloaded with the double oven now being attached and it is not earthed.
As I said to Mr T next time I want a new kitchen I will move house to one that has just had one fitted. I would rather move than do this again.
Thanks b, It did make me smile, I am so tempted to take all the bits that are not attached back to them.
I have spoken to the sales person I dealt with twice and she still forgot to order the parts as did the receptionist and the head of admin...
The electrician is now 30 mins late, I have to take Little Master T to the doctors soon so he had better turn up.
The website link you gave me is awful. But I am determined to get this sorted and quickly. I will stand in their store and tell eveyone how bad they are if ness.
Now 20 to 10 still no sign of the electrician...lol what did I expect
Yeah.... he turned up @ 10.00
The electrician was lovely and he did all of the relevant work.
The fitter has just phoned and said that he will be here at 9.00am tomorrow, he will fix the hob and oven and take the washing machine out, not fix it just remove it and then he is walking off the job. He said he will not come back to do any of the outstanding work.
They are really beginning to wind me up. I have told Mr T he is having the day off and can be here to support me on it. If they think I am doing without a washing machine with 2 little kids until the middle of july they are very mistaken.
My plan so far is to go to the local store on Saturday and just let everyone know just what a great company they are. If this does not work I will approach some of my old work colleages in the local paper (I worked there for over 10 years as a manager) and see if they would like to take photos of my son with a washing machine on his back or the S***** job they are trying to pass as a kitchen.
Sorry but really needed to rant!!!!!
Trading Standards are now involved. MFI have 7 days to fix my kitchen or I will get an independant kitchen fitter in to do the work.
None of the doors are level, the washing machine still does not have one, there is still a big hole in the sink, the list is endless.
I have sent 2 letters to MFI and they have completly ignored them
Trading Standards have said after the 7 days are up which end on Friday then I can take them to the small claims court.
All I want is a nice kitchen we have Mr T's sister and my sister coming to visit from Spain in 2 weeks and we would like to be able to have them over for meals etc. But as the kitchen stands we won't be able to.
Yeah, MFI are sending around a proper fitter today to try and fix the kitchen. Good job really the washing machine went bang last night and flooded the kitchen. Lucky I caught it early so no damage done.
