This is not a subject I'd given much thought to. But apparently not taking enough liquid can stop your child concentrating and could cause poor health, etc.

When I was at school (a long time ago) they seemed to treat drinks as something of a treat and not important. Is it dfferent today? I HOPE it is, but I somehow doubt it.

Schools in my LA issue the primary school kids with water bottles so they can hvae access anytime because of the research. High School kids are also allowed to drink water in the class  .

Although my 4 year old takes a drinks bottle to school, it comes home every day almost full. She regularly gets constipated during term time. I can only put this down to the fact she is not getting enougth liquid!
Other mums have also noticed this.

My children's primary school also let them have water bottles during lessons, wasn't there a study not long ago linking drinking water to learning, anyway it's ever since that became news- if that makes sense!!! A far cry from when I went to school where you had a drink of water at lunchtime and that was it 'til you went home :D CN

Yes, we had a letter home last year sometime asking us to send the kids in with a bottle of water until water coolers were provided in the school as a result of this research.

However, I am still not sure if the water coolers are in situ yet...either way, my lot seem to not bother taking a bottle any more  .

I shall ask them about it!!

Good topic NB!!

My middle JJ has suffered from bladder infections recently,

My doc said that it is common knowledge that little uns do not get enough fluid. They wake up rush around and ..in the midst of getting ready for school ,may have a small glass of juice. At school they have , if they are ' lucky' the use of a water fountain between 300 children..?? and then at lunch they get one small cup of water or juice.By the time they get home from school and settle down they might have 1 or maybe 2 more glasses before bedtime.

That is still half the recommended fluid intake!!!

My doctor attributes my daughters condition to lack of fluids at school.

My children's primary has the water coolers fitted, what Mazza mentioned. Can't you take this up with your Education authority,JJ, perhaps showing them the article neighboured mentioned? CN

My kids primary school gave them all water bottles, which they fill in the morning at school and have on their desks to sip at all through the day.

I'm a dinner lady at the school and I make sure all the children in my care have a full glass of water with their meal, I agree water is very important during a school day.

my daughter can take a bottle of water to school if she wants and they can have them at their desk.

a far cry from my day - we must have been so dehydrated!

however, Little Miss Annabel also says she tries not to go toilet at school, especially not number 2's because 'the toilets arent clean' - and her school has just been rebuilt with everything brand new!
