I am still taking the anti-depressants and on the waiting list for counselling, but I thought I might give Acupuncture a go.

I saw an item about it on This Morning and looked up the British Acupuncture Council and found a few therapists in my local area.

I really want to try anything that will help me on the road to recovery without more tablets, so I wondered if anyone else had tried it for similar problems.

Thanks

T xx :)

Hi Tortoise

I can't speak from personal experience but my gran suffered for a lot of years with the depression caused by long-term pain and she swore by acupuncture to "lift" her every once in a while - it certainly seemed to help (the depression, not the pain unfortunately).

My opinion is - surely it's worth a shot - I don't think it can actually do any harm, can it?
Sorry I can't help much on this one :(
Best of luck if you decide to try it though!

Mr Hubby Annabel goes for acupuncture on his hands and says he has felt the benefit from it. :) He also takes some homeopathic tablets the acupuncturist suggested, they took a while to take effect but the two things combined have lessened his symptoms

Before you decide, have you considered things like aromatherapy massage, yoga as a means of relaxing tension and helping 'centre' yourself?

I say that because Mr Hubby Annabel finds the whole acupuncture experience very tranquil and relaxing so I think that helps the process as well. :D

A very different reason, but I had it for several months, along with physio for pain and stiffness from a bad upper-arm fracture. I reckon it really helped it that particular circumstance, but I don't know about it's uses in depression/emotional issues. Could be worth a few sessions to see though - can't see how it would hurt (no pun really intended ;) ).

Thanks all! :)

I might give one of the centres a call and see what their prices are.

My cousin and I are going to enrol in a yoga class too.

I couldn't do reflexology though - can't bear my feet to be touched!! :D

T, how are you finding the yoga?

I have just started doing it myself, been going for three weeks now. I'm enjoying it but finding it really hard to get the breathing right. Also I am still finding it difficult to relax!

Hi Tortoise,

There are many debates about the credibility of acupuncture, the more common "against" argument is that it is more a psychological treatment than a physical one. I have very little personal experience but once my mom suffered from a mild stroke and half her face was paralysed, acupuncture cured it after a few weeks of treatment! So I would say give it a go (make sure the acupuncturist is licensed), be it psychological or physical treatment, if it works, why not?

This site (www.quackwatch.org) has a very bias but very well researched arguements "against" acupunture and other medical treatments it deems has very little or no grounds. But my take is that if you want to argue a point, you will always go and find supporting evidence to support your view, and I suspect if people try hard enough, there will be enough evidence to counter the claims. Don't let this site put you off, take it with a pinch of salt.

Good Luck

Ses

Hi There

I had acupuncture for a back problem I have and sadly it didnt work for me (mind you it was my GP doing it as an experimental treatment and he put the needle in the wrong location and made the problem worse!!!) so on personal experience I would say it's not for everyone and everyone who tries it has a different reaction to it.
what I can however Highly recommend as a treatment for depression, anxiety, general aches and pains and ooh loads more stuff is Reiki.
There is scientific evidence that Reiki does work and I can attest to it's effects personally. I am a trained reiki master fully qualified and insured to treat the general public so if you do decide to give it a go make sure whoever you choose is properly qualified.
A good website I am a member of is the Association of Usui Reiki Healers, we are primarily based in the south west of the UK BUT we do have regional secretaries who if you contact should be able to put you in touch with a reputable fully qualified Reiki Practitioner. (website is www.usuireikihealers.co.uk) there is also a message board on there you can ask questions on and find information out on too.

I had a problem with a particularly nasty NFH and after I started sending reiki to "the situation" it all but dissappeared in a couple of weeks. A lot of people are wary about reiki but I thought I would put a post up in this section explaining a little more about it (Hope that's ok by everyone)

Hope you find a suitable treatment that helps oh and btw I would also recommend massage and reflexology if only for the sheer relaxation from both LOL

Best of luck
Ally

I've had acupuncture and found it very relaxing, but after I stopped going the problem came back, this was for a bad back.
Did anybody see the programme on TV where the woman had open heart surgery, she was concious and had the acupuncture instead of anaesthetic ( think thats spelt right)
