Pet radio purrs around the world

A California pet lover has founded an internet radio station designed to ease the lives of lonely dogs and cats around the world.

Styled as "the radio station all pets prefer", DogCatRadio.com goes out live 17 hours each day from a van in the car park of a Los Angeles recording studio.

DJs speak to pets directly, and ask "pet parents" to send in pictures.

Founder Adrian Martinez, 34, says the station aims to keep pets company while their "parents" head out to work.

DogCatRadio's daily play list ranges from the soothing sounds of wispy Irish singer Enya to Elvis Presley's classic anthem, Hound Dog.

In between tracks, Mr Martinez and his fellow DJs offer practical advice to pet owners, plus a liberal sprinkling of the station's signature sound - barks and miaows.

Housebound hounds chewing their way through the family furniture come in for an occasional ribbing.

Happy pets

Mr Martinez, an independent record producer, hopes that many of his audience will be listening in while at home alone, albeit with a little help from their human friends.

"My cat, Snickers, asked me to do it," Mr Martinez told the New York Times.

Faced with a nervous, restless cat at home one day, Mr Martinez discovered that Snickers calmed down almost as soon as he turned up the background music a little.

Quickly realising how happy Snickers was with a regular slice of 1980s rock, Mr Martinez set up DogCatRadio to spread the message.

"I wanted to do something for the pet community," he said.

The station, which claims 8,000 listeners each week through its website, currently makes no money.

But the US pet industry is worth an estimated $35bn (£19.7bn) annually, and Mr Martinez eventually hopes to attract advertising.

Ditto Eeyore's comments!

Sad s*d that I am, I tried to get the station from their website link that Matthew gave but it doesn't seem to work - is it just me, or maybe wrong time of day for broadcasts? Thought they might have posted the freq for it too but don't see anything. Sometimes my Mac is funny about these things though, so might just be me... not that my menagerie would appreciate it anyway!

Just wondering if anyone can work out the frequency for this - I'd love to try and get it on my world radio receiver!

Thanks for this one Matthew!!

A sad, radio-hamming Smoo!

I downloaded the Media Player file from the link when I clicked on the speaker and it tuned in then automatically. :)

See attached file (virus checked) >> [attachmentid=1206] (if it doesn't load automatically when you click on it, open it manually from Windows Media Player, Winamp, etc). :music:

Got it now, thanks!
I must have been too early for the 17 hours a day last time! Have had it on for the past 10 mins now - mad and fab!
However, I don't think I'll be leaving my internet connected for the cat and dog while I'm out! Although I do leave the TV on - not for company of any sort, but just because the cat has taken to sleeping on top of it and I feel guilty that he'll get COLD if I put it off (How soft am I???). it's darn cold here just now and I am not inclined to leave any heating on in case the bottled Butane freezes and goes out, as it has often this winter, then defrosts and there are gas leaks.

I thought I was daft about my animals. some Americans really know how to take the biscuit, or is that Bonio!! :D

If they could get the nice dj to say" get off of my furniture" every fifteen minutes i would consider leaving it on for my dog when im out :o

Sadly, our cat is totally unmoved by this.

Mind you, not sure how Earth Wind and fire is intended to be of any use to a cat or a dog...  :hihi:

At least its not snoop doggy dogg and his homey Nate Dog! B) or perhaps Cat Stevens? repeated playings of the Beach Boys lost classic Pet Sounds?

Getting carried away now! (about time some would say)

We definitely need a personalised radio station that says "Amber, stop pinching dog food, Comet be quiet, the pizza man is not coming today, and Star, do not run round the house like it's a racetrack" :D

Must admit, our dogs like music, but they far prefer TV, Star and Amber sit and watch it for ages, the one thing they don't like though is when we put on a DVD with surround sound and it's MGM - that lion roaring has them all leaping up ;)
