Don't get me wrong - I love our new house. Hubby and I are both over the moon with it. It's hopelessly outdated but we have got lots of plans for updating etc.

When we first moved in I explained to a friend that we had purchased the house at a good price, following the death of the owner. She made a silly comment about ghosts etc which I laughed off but I must admit I didn't get that much sleep that night as I was rehearsing what I would say to Mr Deceased if he ever happened to appear before me!! After that I forgot all about it.

But last week something odd happened while hubby was out playing snooker. I was sat at one end of the sofa watching tv, the cat was sat in the middle. Out of nowhere I felt a big thud at the other end of the sofa, like it had been kicked. The cat felt it too as he half jumped up and looked that way. There is nothing at the end of the sofa that could have fallen against it. I know I did not imagine it.

Also the cat has started acting a bit strange. Sometimes he will be fine one minute and the next he is staring at nothing and then leaping off the sofa and running out of the room. He is miaowing at us a lot more, sometimes it sounds like someone talking, it's quite unnerving!

I know I am probably worrying about nothing but I can't explain the big thud. I also can't explain why one end of our front room always seems to be cold, even when the radiator is on at that end and the gas fire is also on.

There are a few cold spots in the house but I am putting that down to the lovely draughty crittall windows we have!! Things seem to be going missing a lot especially my door keys. But that's probably just me. The other day I searched high and low for them as I was leaving for work, and I found them in my bag once I got to work, when I could swear blind they were not there when I left the house. Also that day I came home, and I couldn't open the front door with the keys, almost as if someone was holding the door shut from the inside.

I don't want to sound like a crackpot. I think I am getting it into perspective already, just by writing it down. Now I feel a bit silly......

 Oh wow, I love a good spooky story.

Phantos, it will be interesting to see if things calm down or it continues - please keep us posted

Yi Win, that's fascinating - I definitely believe in ghosts  . Interestingly, someone we know has a similar story - she has seen a lady staning on the first floor, but without the window that is there now. It turns out the window was a 20thC addition to a 19thC house :o

Hi Phantos,
When those ghosts start playing music until 3 in the morning, start running around screaming and shouting all night and have their ghost mates over to party, that`s the time to start worrying ;)

All the best,

I wouldn't worry about it Phantos :) they don't seem malevolent at all so I'd just accept them as part of the house, like the heating system! :)

Our odd story is that in another house we lived in happily for 12 years, we had a few spooky occurrences. One was when my daughter saw the poker start to swing on the companion set for no apparent reason, and it swung for a few minutes. Then the music tape she was listening to was interupted by some static and a male voice said "Don't go out in the car on Saturday." She was well spooked by it and when I cam in from the shops, she played the tape and was so upset by it, we didn't go out in the car on Saturday. We took the bus. It goes a different route than where I usually drove - all around the houses - you know! When we passed the end of a road I'd have driven down, there was a 6 car pile up, police, ambulances, tapes and diversion signs. There were 5 people killed in that and several injured. One driver lost her leg. We told the story to others that day and played the tape. The static and message were no longer there. There was just the music, totally uninterrupted.

hi p
welcome back :)

im a believer so i dont think you are mad or crazy although most non believers may think we are all looney tunes

the main thing is not to scare yourself witless about it and let it spoil your enjoyment of your new home give it a little while and see how things settle your cat could just be a bit anxious and unsettled like you are

if you really do feel uncomforatable with it all you could always find a reputable clairvoyant and ask for their advice
try not to worry :)

look up your local spiritualist church and get some advice from them. They may send someone round to find out who it is. Usually a spirit making noises like that are not malicious, they just want to get your attention and make themselves known.

I'd rather have a noisy spirit than a noisy neighbour..... the spirits are more intelligent!!

One of the other spooky things were - I went through a spate of going into the hallway to pick up the phone just before it actually rang. That went on for about 3-4 weeks and was purely instinctive. The phenomenon ended when my duaghter saw a report about the Enniskillen bomb on TV and suddenly said " (named man) has died." I got up to go for the not-yet-ringing phone and when I picked it up before it rang, the voice on the other end told me this freind had died in the bombing. Then the caller said "I didn't hear your phone ringing before you picked it up," and I said "it didn't." That was the las time I had the impulse to pick a phone up before it rang.

We have a few here I think. One likes to go up and down the stairs and I was taught it was rude to cross on the stairs so I would wait at the top/bottom and feel someone go past me. We have, 2 nights ago actually, heard noise in the kitchen as though someone was cooking and then we smelt food, dont know what it was but it did smell good. the cat will sit and watch and follow "noting!, its all odd but we dont mind at all this house wouldnt be our home without them.

I used to be a nurse and experienced loads of spooky stuff in the hospital  :o

My sister used to have nasty things happen in her house - china flying around the kitchen etc - not good!!!!

My cousin lives in a house with a ghost and she is used to it now. The only time it freaked her out was when she went into the cellar and the door slammed shut behind her  . She shouted at the ghost and nothing quite so scary happened again, just things like objects going missing. Oh, and her youngest son sees a lady

I think I put a post about the ghost we had on another thread somewhere here not so long ago. It used to walk up and down the stairs, fiddle with locks etc.

In the end we lived together quite happily once I asked it to stop scaring me and the kids. It complied and never appeared late at night after that!

I did do some research on the house and found that one family had lived there for many years. They had a daughter called Minnie. That was the name of one of our cats and I often wonder if this poor woman was being called back from the other side every time we called the cat in for dinner!

I am wondering if anything else will happen once we start some serious renovations.

also we have a lodger moving in at the end of the month and I won't be used to hearing him move about the house - so that's bound to set me off isn't it?!!

I wouldn't worry Phantos, your "house guest" probably just wants to get your attention... after all, they did live there at one time, and it must be hard being ignored all day in your own home.

We've got a couple ourselves... a little girl and a lady. I don't think you can avoid house guests if you live in an old building. The lady is certainly Victorian... not sure about the little girl, but the building did used to be a school so maybe she was a student here. When the lady passes she leaves cold air where she's been, but the little girl doesn't... can't figure that out. Our two play with our youngest ratties. We don't mind, although we do have to fasten the top of the cage properly or they let the ratties out when we're in bed.

You know when you've got a malignant house guest... they make it very obvious. We had one some years ago, and I couldn't stand to be alone in the flat. We sold up and moved.

We wouldn't want our two to leave now though... they make the place more interesting. They do pinch things and put them in the strangest places, but all we do is ask them to give them back, and they do.

I had a wierd experience going back quite a few years now when I was preganant which I still can't explain. My partner was working nights at the time so I had settled down for the long night in to watch "Soldier Soldeir" feeling rather peckish, during the adverts I decided to make a pot noodle, so I poured boling water up to the fill level of the pot noodle, stirred it with a fork and left the fork in it. I stood in my kitchen doorway so I could carry on watching telly while waiting ,as I turned to walk back in the kitchen after a couple of minutes, I heard an actual ping and the fork flew out of the pot noodle, went up in the air then landed at my feet, I was standing a good few feet away from the kitchen side where the pot noodle had been, I just stood stunned!! I lived at that place a couple of years and never had anything else happen. My Son was only four at the time and is now 17, I've never told him about "the case of the flying fork" but he insists to this day that he hated his bedroom in that house as black shapes used to dart around the ceiling at night!

In our last house a few things happened, like an ashtray fell of the table and smashed but we were no where near it. I also had a very bad feeling when I first moved in. (Mr T has lived there for a few years and then I joined him). I got the local priest to give me some holy water so I could put it in every room. Not that it helped much.

One night me and Mr T where lying in bed talking about ghosts and I said if we had a ghost in here wouldn't it be funny if the door flew open (bad move on my behalf as I am a real scaredy cat where ghosts are concerned), next thing the door of the bedroom flew open with a crash, I nearly passed out with fright, I thought Mr T would be better but he hid under the covers shaking and wouldn't come out!!! I think I have a bit of a feeling for these things and I don't think our ghost was very friendly. But then Mr T's very odd brother was living with us and he was very much into the occult and not in a nice way. I put the house on the market not long after. (Mr T also made his brother move back to their parents house)

As many of you know, Mr.sp is a headteacher. His school was built between the wars, and during the war was used for various things for the military. It is also opposite a WW2 airfield, so the area has a lot of history of activity during the war.

Over the years there have been several sightings of a man in uniform walking the corridors

The sightings are very often after school when the building is quiet and many of the sightings were made by school cleaners. This has gone on for many years. Mr sp is the biggest sceptic, but even he says there is a definite cold spot in the area he is usually sighted. :o

When I was 5 we moved to an old house which was a wreck. It had been empty for years and the chap who lived there before had died in the house.

From the moment we moved in my mum and dad said there was something wierd about the place. Noises, bumps in the night etc... Anyway my dad began to renovate the place and 'whoever' was not pleased. We would be all sitting in the lounge in the evening and all the internal doors in the house would open and slam shut at the same time, this happened several times.

The kettle would start boiling even when nobody had been in the kitchen.

one morning my mum came downstairs and found her willow pattern crockery which she displayed on a welsh dresser, on the floor, layed out in the same order as when it was in the cabinet.

There was a light switch that would never work, we had electricians in to mend it, but as soon as they left the light would go out.

My dad was a sceptic and always tried to rationalize all these things but one night he went upstairs for a bath and we heard an almighty bang, my mum went into the hall and found my dad at the bottom of the stairs. He was white as a sheet. He said as he had got to the top of the stairs he saw what looked like a frozen mist in the shape of a person, and it was crying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say as soon as the house was completed we moved!!!

 :o OMG, OMG. I am not surprised he fell down the stairs.

One of the spookiest things to happen to me was when I had just started my nurse training. At the time we each had our own room in the nurses home. One night I had just got into bed and was still wide awake, when I heard the sound of somebody else breathing in my room  [I was alone]. I even held my breath to make sure it wasn't me, but the breathing got closer and louder :o It was not normal breathing, more like someone unwell and having difficulty breathing. I was terrified, but then I felt the end of my bed sink down and the covers tighten around my legs just as if someone had sat on the bed :o Well, I wanted, and tried, to scream and run out of the room, but I was literally paralized with fear  I couldn't move and worse I couldn't scream out . I tried and tried but couldn't make a sound. Then all of a sudden the tightness of the covers went and the breathing stopped, and 'it' went. You didn't see me for dust after that. Lots of strange things happened there  Horrid!

Hi Phantos :)

its sounds very interesting at your home!

My last house had "guests" (3) and this house doesnt and it may sound strange but I do rather miss them! :D its so quiet without them.

I think if I were you I would talk to them, stand in the middle of the lounge and talk out loud, tell them that you understand that they want to to live there and you also live there now, tell them you dont mind sharing with them.....you can add in I will keep out of your way if you keep out of my way!

you might sound daft doing it but you never know!

I did that in my last house, told them what I expected of them, as in dont bang around when I am watching something good on telly and the most important thing was not to play with power tools (yes they did and I really told them off about the dangers!!! )

If stuff went missing I would ask out loud for it back, saying things like "I am not saying you have taken it but I really need it, so if you can help me find it that would be great" then I would leave the room for a few mins and often enough it would be on the sofa or floor etc!

Animals are very very sensitive to these things and are a good indicator of whose around and when :)

I hope you all learn to live together in peace :clover:

Reading this thread has given me the willies  I hope things settle down in your new home soon. I remember being told by a vicar who helped a friend of mine with an 'exorcism' to move a spirit on, that some dwellings do have imprints of time effecting them. Nope nothing further to report. I'm almost a little disappointed!!

The last couple lived here for 50 years so I can imagine why they would be a little put out that suddenly we have moved in and started to change things. We bought some of the furniture that was in this house, so we are sitting on their sofas and eating our dinner on their dining table. So much of their stuff was left behind it almost felt like we were trying to move into an occupied house, as it were. We have taken down their pictures and we even have our mattress on their old bedstead (we liked it and the daughter couldn't take it apart so we decided to buy it).

Of the couple, the lady passed away a couple of years back, and the gentleman passed away last March. We found their passports hidden on top of a wardrobe when we moved in. I felt a bit strange looking at their photos.

Well, if they are watching us they I hope they understand that we want to look after their house and improve it.

If anything else were to happen I'm not sure I would feel comfortable contacting the church. As I've never been a religious person I would feel a bit hypocritical. I think I would do as Beth suggested and try to talk to them and explain things.

It's nice to know there are so many of you out there who have lived with ghosts. Let you know if we have any more occurences!!

I've often heard of people experiencing things when they start to make alterations to a property

Many years ago my sister moved into a house and it was when they started working on it things started to happen.
Sadly, their 'visitor' was not of the harmless sort  and it was very, very frightening. I speak as someone who babysat for them and spent a terrified night there on one occasion :( There's was unusual, most 'ghosts' are not out to scare or harm you at all. We used to live in a very haunted house.

There was a Roman soldier who used to march through a tree in the garden. It turned out that the land level had been dug down and he was on the original ground level. There was a small Roman fort about a mile away.

Also, there was a woman dressed in nuns clothing and two very mishapen, sickly looking men with her. They would appear in one of the bedrooms. It was quite touching, as they would cling to her robes, and she had her hands round them, clutching them to her, as if she was trying to protect them. One was an old man and the other a young man who looked like he was mentally handicapped. They looked very scared, she looked angry, fierce and very determined.

Apparently our house had been built where a footpath had run to a monestary, and the bedroom would have been on the original ground level.

I have just had another incident which may be nothing but then again... :(

Went to my aerobics class tonight ( new year's resolution!) and my friend dropped me back so i invited her in for a glass of juice and a chat. We were playing with the cat, on the sofa, he was sat in the same place as the 'sofa kicking' incident. He was merrily pretending to bite my hand, as he does, then suddenly he completely spooked and shot down the side of the sofa, all wide-eyed and trembling. Eventually we got him to come out at which point he shot upstairs to our spare room (he likes to sit up there as we have got our old sofas in there - they obviously smell nicer to him than the ones we bought from Mr Deceased).

Friend drank up her juice and went to leave, she was standing in my front doorway while we arranged to meet for a yoga class on Friday (aren't I good?!) when she started a bit and said she thought she felt something behind her (bear in mind this would have been outside though). After my friend left I went up to the spare room to find the cat, sat down on the old sofa and the cat was still looking nervously at a space just behind me, in the doorway. I heard the floorboards creak right next to me!! I did freak a little.

I've now brought the cat downstairs again and as I;m sitting here typing this he is clinging to my neck. I expect he will calm down in a bit. Hubby's out playing snooker again. Meanwhile I need a bath and I'm too scared to go upstairs on my own!!

Hi, the attaching itself to objects/ furniture I've heard of to,like a reverse of a good luck charm, if you want to look at it like that. Maybe that could be the problem your having? My Mum loves her boot sales and is always finding me bits there, if ever I have a run of bad luck, I get rid of anything brought into the house second hand last. well maybe you are right about the sofas then.

One more thing happened last night after I had shut my computer down. I was getting ready for bed, I had waited up for hubby to come home but it was getting really late so I decided to go upstairs. At 3 minutes to 1 my phone rang, I thought it would be hubby but when I looked it said "number withheld." So I answered it, and at first it sounded like someone had called me by mistake - you know when it sounds all crackly and muffled, like their phone dialled out in their pocket or bag, and you can just hear random background noises. Then it changed into a looping message which I think was saying "Cat, it's a pussy cat" over and over. And there was laughing too.

When I hung up my phone didn't register a received call at all.

I stayed wide awake until hubby came home!!!

hi phantos

Im sure you arent going mad at all sometimes when you are nervous and alone things seem worse
seriously try talking to whoever it is as suggested or if you feel silly doing that write a note on a piece of paper and leave it on the sofa or somewhere it can be seen try not to be afraid chances are once you acknowledge whoever is there they will leave you in peace :)

Hi,
Doesnt sound to me as if you are goingmad. I would just say out loud OK ha ha please stop now. Sounds lame but whoever is doing this should stop.
If it doess top then happy days, if it doesnt then maybe you need to find a spiritualist church thats local and have a word.
Sounds extreme I know but it has been known to work.
Maybe just pop along for a chat anyway, put your mind at rest.

chin up,, you are not going mad.

;) :)

:) Hi Phantos,

Nope your not going mad honey. :) You sound like quite a sensitive person, so maybe you are more able to pick up 'vibes' and such.

Just trust your intuition for now and if it 'feels' bad then maybe pop along to your local vicar. They won't poo poo your events, in fact just the opposite ;)

Trust me

Well thanks for not making me feel like a complete freak everyone :)

My sister in law is now convinced we have a ghost and wants to come round with her video recorder to gather evidence!! I wish I had never mentioned it to her. I don't really want to encourage anything.

We stripped a load of wallpaper off in the other spare bedroom last night but no repercussions so far!

I too scrolled down, past the seemingly goggle-de-gook (which is actually, it seems, html coding!) and the pix were big enough for me to see at the bottom.

In the first one, I see some lights in the alcove recess bit halfway up the wall - which could just be a pair of fashionably narrow and slanty sunglasses catching the camera's flash light.

But the second, with the shadowy figure of a person is more interesting!

Tell me Miss Mellie, how did it all feel when you took the photos? Did you see the figure or did it just appear once the pix were developed?

It wasn't by any chance Bodmin Jail was it?

We went there a few years ago and it was the saddest 'feeling' place I have ever visited in my life. You could feel the misery seeping out of the walls. Very weird experience.

Hi Phantos

Have just caught up with this thread....
I agree that renovations can unsettle "things" in a house, but probably nothing to worry about. I have had a few experiences like that while doing up my last house and, while I am always looking for a realistic explanation, quite a few defy logic. The biggest pain was a ghost cat - I fell over it numerous times, once right in the middle of an empty room and seriously hurt my knee (stone cold sober I may add!) - you know how you just glimpse something at the last minute and it's too late? It was a black cat, my moggy is white and was lying curled up on top of the TV as per - so no mistaken identity. I said nothing but soon after Mr S & I were sitting watching TV when a black cat shot across the room and disappeared under the stove. (I had not long met Mr S and hadn't said anything about my ghosts as he's even more skeptical than me) - we were both a bit spooked. The cat looked very perplexed and went to investigate but of course there was nothing there.
I also kept seeing a little boy hanging over a bannister in the corner of my kitchen, just round the corner from where I keep falliong over the cat, and a horrible creaking noise before he disappeared - I really thought I was going mad at that, especiallly as there is no bannister there; turned out (at least rumours from speaking to some of the older local folk) the house was previously converted from a hayloft and a young boy had died when he fell from it while looking for his cat - make what you will of that!
I have also taken quite a few photos of things that weren't there - but for the spookiest yet, can any techno buffs tell me if there is an explanation for a series of 6 photos all taken in bright daylight for the middle one to come out looking like dusk with a huge flash of light across the sky (where I later learn there is supposed to be a "portal" to "the other side")???

I think if you accept any strange happenings and don't worry about it, they won't do anything to annoy you - maybe if you get scared, things start disappearing to wind you up all the more - give the house s severe talking-to and see if it stops! (Just make sure no-one hears you or they'll be phoning the wee white van with the square wheels and bringing you a new jumper with nice long sleeves!)

Hope things are settling down now! :)

Hi sp,
yes it is Bodmin Jail, and it is a sad place...
Just before christmas another "Hanging Pit" was found... A relative of mine lives very close to the jail and she has been told that if they dug under her house, that there would be loads of "remains" as a lot more people were killed at the jail than the records show, and the"bodies" would just be "disposed" of.
I have a great interest in all things supernatural, until im on my nightshift :( ...then my imagination gets the better of me, lol
[/b]

WOW! :o I just new it was Bodmiin Jail

I am fairly sensitive to spiritual things [had a lot of experiences when I was a nurse] and we visited the jail when we were on holiday about 3 or 4 years ago. It was a bright sunny August day, but the second I walked in there I felt overwhelmingly sad and the whole place just oozed terrible things happening there. I have heard that buildings can take in peoples emotions over the years, so something like Bodmin Jail must have seen such awful things and you can still feel the terror and sadness. We visit lots and lots of old places - old houses and castles etc, but I can honestly say Bodmin Jail is the only place to have such a strange effect on me. It was a really interesting place, but I was glad when we left, and the whole atmosphere 'lifted' when we walked out of the entrance to it. Very strange place.

Smoo - I am convinced that once my ghosts see the fruits of all my hard decorating labour - they will be satisfied that I am not trashing their house! Nothing else wierd has happened since monday, I am pleased to report.

I look forward to seeing your other pics miss mellie! I am taking some pics in the house at the mo (just before and after shots so I can document what we have done to the place). Nothing odd yet I don't think but then I haven't really looked very closely!

Absolutely - I haven't seen a thing since I washed the final paintbrush!
But now we are starting on our new wreck of a house (AND I've heard that it IS supposed to be haunted by the spirit of a Marquis's daughter who hung herself on the stairs), I will let you know if anything happens! :D (BTW, we are keeping the original staircase, complete with a very strange groove in it....

Just make sure you don't paint anywhere grey - it gives them camouflage to creep up on you later, Phantos! :hihi: :D

When I lived in Northern Ireland I had a friend who told me she'd seen the ghost of a monk walk through her living room. She said he looked ill and had hands and feet bandaged. The area she lived in was called Dunluskin. A lot of areas in Northern Ireland were from the Gaelic and some were translated to English or made spelt a bit more Englishly. Dublin came from Dhu vlin (dunno if I spelt that 100% right) which meant Black Pool. So, I started wondering about this ill monk and the original name of Dunluskin. Turned out it was Dun Loscann. Dun is castle or fort. Loscann is toads, frogs or wretches. I looked at old maps of the area and found that there was a leper colony on the site of my friend's house and the lepers had been looked after by monks from a nearby monastery, some of whom caught the disease themselves. The colony was a fortified settlement, built so to contain the illness. Fort of wretches seemed a fitting name for the townland my friend lived in. My friend was never a local history buff and was so shocked when she heard it that she moved. Sh got it into her head that it was a waarning that the land was "sick." Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. I don't know what the causes of leprosy are and if they lie dormant in a place, but she just wasn't happy there and the ghost was scaring her three children to the point that one had panic attacks when she saw anyone in a duffle coat.
No explaining that one, is there?

Pleased (kinda) to report that we have had no further 'goings on'. Lodger has moved in and I feel better with one more person in the house, especially as hubby is out a few evenings a week.

Maybe they are happy now I have finished decorating for a bit... :-)
