 I decided to clean the glass of the oven door, it being christmas 'n all.

Housekeeping is not my strong point and this sort of job tends to get put on the back burner until I'm either really bored or Christmas comes again.

Oven is a Hygena fan model. It has a glass door with an inner glass panel. This inner glass panel is held in place by two small sort of tongues at the top of the door and two clip type holder things at the bottom of the door.

Slipped the glass out, gave it a good scrub so it's all now nice and clean and shiney. Started to slip it back in through the little tongues at the top of the door. There was a really nasty ~crack~ and one of the little tongues broke off. :o

I swore and panicked. My son came through and managed to slip the glass in without compromising the remaining tongue thing and the two clips at the bottom. Then he told me I should have been more careful. I decided bursting into tears  was preferable to hitting him.

The oven is still useable but I'm nervous that the strain on the remaining tongue will be too great and cause it to shear off as well. It, of course, being Christmas Eve tomorrow, means I have no hope in hell of getting a new door, a new bit or a new oven fitted and ready for the turkey Christmas morning.

So, what can I use to fix it temporarily? Does anyone have the name of a readily available heat resistant (to 200 degrees centigrade for about 5 hours) that I could buy tomorrow morning that I could use to stick the glass panel to the metal side for the duration?

Bonkers Mad!!!

oh no what a disaster :o

do you have a shop that sells spares anywhere near you? the shops are open tomorrow so if you're lucky you could get a replacement part.

sorry i can't be of more help

:( Oh flip!!

Off hand MU I don't know other than try and use foil as a wedge for the time being. I really don't know what else would be heat resistant that would 'stick'. You could call your local hardware/ironmonger store...they may have some ideas.

You could try an egg mix or flour and water maybe?

Oh er MU poor you.......only thing I can suggest for you now is to go and have a little drink to calm down and I am sure someone else might come up with some tips.

Good luck poppet.

:) MU ring your local DIY store or look on the web to see if there is any heat resistant bonding you could nip out and buy or maybe use a large metal paperclip?

Oh dear! Does your oven come with a customer care line? Personally I wouldn't risk using it until it's fixed. You may be able to buy a microwave/convection oven in which to cook your Christmas dinner at somewhere like Argos.

Perhaps you consider making this a Christmas where you don't eat a traditional dinner, but have something that can be cooked on your hob.

I am so sorry that this has happened to you - I can only imagine how you are feeling.

hi mu

i used to have a hygena slot in cooker so i can picture the problem

i wouldnt advise using any glues as they may give off toxic fumes with the heat

dont suppose you know someone who does welding maybe a local mechanic they may be able to tack weld the clip back on for you

sorry i cant be of more help :)

Oh you poor love

I've no practical advice to offer, just sympathy  A few years back the glass on my oven door broke mid Xmas dinner cooking  . With another shopping day to go maybe you should have a rethink and go for a cold buffet??? Or, go through your local paper/yellow pages to find someone. You will pay extra but may be worth while?

Good luck,hun

Thanks all.

Tried the customer care number on the brochure that came with the oven (it's only two and a bit years old) and guess what - I get a message "I'm sorry, the number you have called is no longer available". It being Hygena, and reading online reports about MFI no longer having a partnership with them or something, and only being able to find a French Hygena site (my holiday French does not cover the technical aspects of it!) I have a sneaking feeling Hygena are no longer operating big time in the UK

The cooking on the hob option is not viable as I have a great big turkey in the fridge and I have guests coming for Christmas lunch. I'm prepared to have a one shot hit and have banned the use of the oven until Christmas day itself. I suspect I'll be first in the queue Boxing Day morning to get a new oven.

I have a combo microwave but again, that's not big enough to take the whole turkey.

er indoors: if only welding was the solution. This tongue thing was made of some sort of bakelite plastic material so welding isn't an option.

My friends and neighbours are on the case so I'm hopeful one of them will do some lateral thinking. I'm also going to do Halfords first thing in the morning to see if they have any tape that fixes exhaust pipes (they get pretty hot don't they?). All I really need is something very thin and very heat resistant that I can use in place of the tongue.

And LP, I'll try the flour/egg/water concoction this evening to see what effect that has. And thankyou for that suggestion of something to drink - I'm now taking that calming glass of something alcoholic!!!
:wine: (it would be nice if they had a symbol for gin....)

And do you know, (no, you don't, but I'll tell you anyway) as I slid the glass out of the door initially, I was thinking you'd better be very careful with this as you wash it, you don't want to drop it and break it...

:( Oh my goodness, I know how you feel...my cooker blew up a week before crimbo a few years back and it was a mad rush to get a replacement before the big day...but at least we had a week to deal with it  .

Best of luck, I am sorry I can't think of any suggestions apart from de-camp to someone else's house and cook the food there ?

I hope it all works out for you, please keep us posted! :clover:

An update on the cooker situation. Am now in less panicking mode. I think as long as the oven door is opened and closed very gently the glass will stay firm. Will add a bit of flour and water paste shortly just to help it a bit. Have had no joy with heat resistant tape yet, but am still working on that.

Best news is I found a terrific help forum for white goods. They have been extremely helpful this morning. I posted a message this morning with a vague attempt of describing the bit that's broken and asking for help.

Within a couple of hours, I'd been reassured that I didn't need to buy a new door or oven, I knew the actual name of the piece itself (right hand strut end cap of all things!), had been quoted a price (under £10, including VAT and postage) and details of how to order it.

Only downside is that they can't get it until after the new year now.

So, with Mazza's indulgence (I did ask her first!) this is the link to the forum I used just in case anyone else has a white goods problem

http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.php?name=Forums

It makes quite fascinating reading.

Yep. Choccies, chrystalised ginger, nuts, pringles, dips, the lot! Am testing the oven out this evening cooking some beef and then, hopefully mince pies!

My daughter in law managed to find some aluminium tape in town this afternoon so we've stuck a tiny bit on to see what happens. It'll either burn off or stay there!

Merry Christmas all
